One of the years biggest let downs. I was expecting an old fashion ghost story from Torro, and what he gave us was a boring generic romance. You could take all the ghost out of this film and it would be the same story. Pointless. I did like the look of the film.

Overall, not bad, but its still far from being anything memorable.

PROS:

-Unsurprisingly, Del Toro's visual style. Costumes & set are fucking great.

-Acting is great. loved Chastain & Wasikowska were standouts for me.

CONS:

-I know how Del Toro's said "its not a ghost story, but a story with ghosts" but still, the ghosts here aren't scary at all. They're clearly cgi, and not very convincing cgi at that. Their scenes were too brief to have any real impact on me.

-Emotionally, it didn't really connect to me either. I can't put it exactly into words.

-For me it was slow..3rd act was kinda worth it though.

Audience response:

Some people left in the middle. Clearly some were expecting all-out horror, and that may affect its box-office dearly.

Anyway, at least it looks good and the actors work with what they have. But its a step down from Del toro's past works, IMO.

One of the best movies of the year, IMO. A true masterpiece only a genius like Del Toro could make. The visuals are stunning. Seeing it filling the whole IMAX screen was amazing. All the three leads were great but Jessica Chastain chewing scenery was incredible. A must see movie.

Very good movie. I loved the blinding colors, and the way the commitment to the classic romance angle made the brief gore scenes hit you way harder. I loved the insane final act and the even more insane Chastain chewing up the scenery. I guess the only flaw was that it was kind of a slight story. But I really liked it.

Didn't expect how much this would be a remake of The Devil's Backbone, just in a different time period/setting and without a shadow of actual history looming over it. Like Pacific Rim, it feels like a guided tour of GDT's obsessions, but the scenery/costumes porn here appeals much more to me than the robots vs monsters porn in that film (seriously, in a just world this would have the Oscars for production design and costumes locked up), and Chastain is great, especially in the end.

I had two substantial problems with this - first, the camera movement and editing are much too modern and dynamic for an old-fashioned gothic throwback, and the plot felt first-drafty and overstuffed as well. Second, as in The Devil's Backbone, there's the idea of ghosts as a metaphor for the past, which is all well and good, except GDT spends roughly the first half of each movie more or less pretending he's doing horror before revealing that the protagonists aren't gonna be harmed by ghosts and should actually be afraid of other humans. For me, in both movies, that transition is done awkwardly enough that it basically comes off as bait-and-switch.

enjoyed it enough because of gothic love story, the visuals and setting stand out ...the ghosts were pretty scary for me , i shy from movies with any hint of ghosts but the things i'll do for tom hiddleston

everytime there were ghosts i hid behind my hands lol ,

Crimson Peak is a beautiful movie to look at. It's got a lot of wonderful costumes, and the set design of the mansion is just astounding. Cinematography is good, although it being shot on digital is occasionally distracting, and the editing is on point. Del Toro directed this quite well. The acting is also quite great, with Chastain really impressing me for the first time, and Wasikowska and Hiddleston performing their roles perfectly. The script is also fun too, as it's a horror melodrama that doesn't actually require the horror elements. Really, I had a lot of fun with this... which might confuse you with my low-ish rating. Simply put, the last ten minutes of the film is incredibly disappointing, devolving into a generic action climax. It leaves such a sour taste in my mouth, I can't call this the Del Toro masterpiece some are proclaiming it to be. Nevertheless, Crimson Peak is one of the year's most interesting films, and I definitely recommend checking it out for technical merit alone, especially since the rest of the film is mostly enjoyable. B

It's okay, production design is absolutely wonderful and you can see a lot of heart was put into the movie, but it fails miserably every time it tries to emulate a horror movie, the middle section, in particular, bored me to tears. Editing was quite off at parts.  60/100

Devil's Backbone 80/100
Hellboy 2 80/100
Pacific Rim 70/100
Pan's 60/100
Crimson Peak 60/100
Hellboy 55/100
Cronos 45/100
Mimic 40/100
Blade II 15/100
