2016 100M Films - 30 down, 6 to go! (Passengers Played The Long Game)

Someone had Sully as a $100m contender, I'm not seeing that.

Dr. Strange is a lock for $150m at minimum in today's MCU fanbase. Once Ant-Man cleared that it's hard to imagine Stephen Strange not doing so as well.

It'll hit 150M but not much more than that.

^^^^

Until they drop the first full trailer and the marketing machine push starts I'd hold off on such statements.

People still keep underestimating MCU properties.

Thor 2 was going to be the first Rotten film, it wasn't and increased over Thor 1's BO

GotG was going to be the first flop, until it was the largest break out since IM1 that no one saw coming until a month+ from release.

Ant-Man was going to be Rotten & Flop--till it didn't.

I was one of the most optimistic people for Ant-Man's chances on here (and I'm still a big stan for the movie!); I'm not feeling like Strange will appeal to general audiences whatsoever.

August should be very interesting.

Other than SS, Pete's Dragon, what else is there?

Kubo? Nine Lives? Ben Hur is a coin-toss, but that

chariot sequence looks bad-ass. Don't Breathe should be

one of those under-100 sleeper hits. Sausage Party?

No other film besides SS is crossing 100m in August. The holdovers: Bourne, Pets, Bad Moms, and Star Trek should continue making coin well into September.

Nine Lives-irrelevant. It'll be lucky to make 20m. I'll go with 17m.

Pete's Dragon- doesn't have enough hype with kids, it's more like a drama/adventure flick and alot of schools will be re-opening. This will come the closest to 100m, but not really. I'm feeling a 80-85m run for it, so only a little bit better than The BFG.

Sausage Party- limited audience b/c of the R-rating, and it's likely gonna be hurt by Suicide Squad. Im anticipating good reviews/WOM will carry it to a respectable, but not huge number. 60-65m

Florence Foster Jenkins-It should find some type of senior audience, and Streep's track record for August is generally good, Ricki and the Flash was her first mis-step in awhile. Going with 46-47m since this one seems more appealing than Ricki to senior audiences.

Ben-Hur-Gods of Egypt made 31m and Risen made 36m, that seems like the range for this one. Unless they try to change up the marketing to appeal to more evangelical audiences I dont see it going much higher. I'll predict 45m.

Kubo and the Two Strings-Highest grossing Laika film is Coraline with 75m, this is probably even less appealing to American audiences. Sadly, i think it's going to be the lowest grossing Laika release to date. Ill predict 36m.

War Dogs-This isn't a broad comedy and we;re getting into the dead zone of summer. It likely appeals to a limited mostly adult audience. Going with a range similar to Whiskey Tango Foxtrot(23m) and The Nice Guys(36m), so around 30m.

Don't Breathe-Interesting concept, and horror has been doing well  this year but again this is a dead spot. 25-26m

Hands of Stone-If this was any good it wouldn't be opening at the end of August. I'll predict 23m, only because Robert De Niro is in it.

Mechanic: Resurrection- Studios keep sticking these weird B-movie action flicks in August and i dont know why because they don't do well. 15m

Actually August 2016 has the most varied, interesting set of  movies in a long time. You have Redford, Streep & DeNiro plus Spacey - all respectable actors - in intriguing movies/concepts. War Dogs look interesting, a mix of hangover & Wolf of Wall St. Don't Breathe looks to be another horror/thriller sleeper hit of this summer along with Shallows & Lights Out. Ben Hur doesn't look like it's gonna outran Exodus or even Kingdom of Heaven but the action looks very elaborate and entertaining. Too bad all these are lacking in buzz and will not add much to the overall box office.

Bad Moms and Sausage Party are next. September has 2 films that have potential(Magnificent Seven, and Storks), Sully could happen but that's if legs are phenomal. Miss. Peregrine's won't make it, Tim Burton has had a hit in a while. October has The Girl On The Train which could play fine. The Accountant could play fine with the adults as well, and be a solid contender. Kevin Hart:What Now? It could debut fine but stand-up comedy films have done mostly $30 or million less(except Eddie Murphy:Raw which made $50 million in 1987 during Murphy's popularity).                 Jack Reacher 2, and Inferno, Jack Reacher 2 could happen but October and a smashed in schedule will hurt. Inferno even if Tom Hanks is in the film doesn't mean a $100 million total would happen.                    Doctor Strange will definitely happen. Trolls Dreamworks Animation is a mixed bag they get hits like Home, but flops like Penguins Of Madagascar and many others. So Trolls is a 50/50.
