And why do you remember that these films came out 18 years ago?  How is it you recall that?  Just curious.

VHS tapes. Goodwill, used stores(Half Price Books). I have also seen most of those. My memory also remembers seeing them in shelves back when my aunt used to work at a old video store called Stars N' Stripes which was basically a video store known for renting new releases and one of grandpa's friends was a frequent porn renter.

If I had to guess as to what year might be my best...dating more than 20 years ago, maybe 1985.

Rambo

Back to the Future

Rocky IV

Color Purple

Empire of the Sun

Runaway Train

Commando

Missing in Action 2

Witness

The Breakfast Club

The Sure Thing

Brewster's Millions

One of the Police Academy's...probably 2

Goonies

Cocoon

Red Sonja

Out of Africa

Spies Like Us

Young Sherlock Holmes

That's about it...reason I remember all of these is that I saw most of them at the theater that year

If I'm going by what I know right now......here is what I have:

Saving Private Ryan

Good Will Hunting

Man in the Iron Mask (because it was the Leo film that didn't top Titanic)

Armageddon

Elizabeth

Shakespeare in Love (cause it won best picture and made me puke)

Lost in Space (because it dethroned Titanic)

Godzilla

Deep Impact

Primary Colors (don't ask why I know this one)

And that's about it......not even sure if Elizabeth is right.

good will hunting was '97. i remember robin williams won the oscar the same year titanic won.

1997 was a great year.

- Release of the biggest film ever, Titanic

- Face/Off AND Con Air!

- Jurassic Park 2, better than the first...

- Star Wars theatrical re-releases

- Jackie Brown, Boogie Nights, and Starship Troopers, all three films the pinnacle of their respective directors' careers

- Austin Powers

- Speed 2: Cruise Control

See @CoolioD1....it's tough when you do it without the aid of the internet

@Maxmoser3 I did not see it in theaters and here's why.

Friday V was obliterated my the sensors.  It came out and  was immediately taken out of cinemas where I was which at the time was Windsor Ontario.  Plus I was 13 at the time and it was Rated R so there was no way I was getting in.

Titanic didn't come out in 1998, it came out at the tail end of '97.

Let me take Baumer's challenge and see how many I can name off the top of my head from 1998 (this is pretty hard TBH):

The Truman Show (my personal favorite movie of the 90s)

Armageddon

There's Something About Mary

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

A Bug's Life

Enemy of the State

Blade

Rush Hour

Shakespeare in Love

American History X

Saving Private Ryan

The Big Lebowski

Antz

The Man in the Iron Mask

The Waterboy

The Wedding Singer

Deep Impact

Rushmore

Mulan

Meet Joe Black

Godzilla

You've Got Mail

Dark City

Rounders

(I am younger than you think. I did not see the majority of these films in theaters.)

I'm usually much better in reverse. Like I'm really good at remembering when every film came out basically, even obscure ones, I can usually tell you what year it was if I've seen it. Of course, if I haven't seen it, then probably not. I think part of that is I used to run a critical review site so it seemed relevant to me and I'd always write the review and put the year in the title, Titanic (1997). That kind of thing.

Although some of your guys' lists, I'm not sure why 1998? I mean Titanic came out in 1997, and people are mixing both years.

I thought 1997 was a good year overall, frankly. A lot of good stuff. I'm pretty bad at naming movies FROM a year, though, if someone said, "Ok what came out in 2004," I would probably draw a blank pretty badly.

PS: If you can't name L.A. Confidential in 1997, then shame on you, honestly. It should at least be remembered as the film Titanic completely robbed of an Oscar. A shitty, melodramatic, cheesy love story for the masses beats a film that is the first in history to win Best Picture from all 11 major critics circles. That was the last time I watched the Oscars, 1998, after that I haven't seen them once since and don't intend to either. Not unless I'm personally nominated. lol.

I actually did a poll in the Speakeasy forum called "Which films do you actually remember from twenty years ago (1995)"? I had to look up the films that came out that year through Boxofficemojo since I didn't remember much. And most people only remembered Toy Story, Apollo 13, Se7en, Twelve Monkeys, Heat, and Jumanji.

Starship Troopers is great and all but Robocop is the pinnacle of Verhoeven's career.

Starship Troopers is one of my favourite films ever. Verhoeven is a master filmmaker though, his films are all brilliant.

Google. Ha ha.

Naaa....I don't think so, I'm sure he really does remember.  I asked which movies you can name without the aid of the internet.  As for Titanic coming out in 1997 @department store basement I obviously know that, but I said which films can you name from 98...never said 97.
