SNOW WHITE | 03.21.2025 | Disney

Recommended Posts

Heard someone say that the best way to have avoided the 7 'magical creatures' mess was to keep the dwarves the same but also have Snow White and The Prince played by little people.

And it made too much sense. Too bad no one at Disney thought of it before jumping the gun and casting Zegler. :(

with little mermaid the diverse casting made sense . The character was just a thing which any race could play as the source material didn’t imply anything

but the Snow White source material , the name itself , the most famous quotes are part of the old style bookS.

even I growing up in a brown country like Pakistan knew the story was about a white girl and a dumb witch asking whose the fairest of them all and she got pissed when she wasn’t anymore . That’s the entire essence of Snow White .

Remaking it alone didn’t make sense in Todays environment and remaking it the way they are doing it is just pure dumb

Why is this called Snow White . Does Disney know the meaning behind the words “Snow White” and what “fairest of them all” term from books and animation means ? What are they attempting ?

Hm. Seems pretty racist!

Her whiteness is really not an issue here. A little makeup and she's as white as they want her to be.

@hasanahmad we aren’t doing this schtick. This goes to everybody else here. There can be other reasons the name Snow White can happen. Don’t use your racist dog whistles here.

are you telling a brown, muslim guy what racism, xenophobia and bigoty is?

Both the original story and movie do connote that whiteness means beauty and whiteness is an important part of the story. It's racist but it is what it is.

Honestly, I would love it if they did this like a play I read recently which would have certain white characters played by black actors and vice versa (uses it as a commentary on racial dynamics and imperialism). Like they should straight up have Zegler play the palest-ass bitch in the world.

Yes.

Now like I said, we're not doing this "well she's supposed to be white" stuff. They'll likely give another reason why she has her name, most of the time people's complaints about race-bending is nonsensical. We're done. If you want to argue with me further on this, you can speak with me privately.

Since I just got warning points for stating my views, I will rephrase my statement:

I think this will bomb spectacularly. And I actually hope it does for the sheer fact of making it seem like dwarves/midgets should not have a role. What? Peter Dinklage and other actors spoke out against the idiotic decision and I'm glad mainstream media was also mostly against the decision.

Midgets have a very tough time in Hollywood, and taking away the opportunity from the only film that would have showcased them so publicly is a fucking disaster.

Shame on Disney.

Dinklage spoke out against it? Interesting.

Has anyone involved in this movie ever tried to explain the reason for such a weird decision? I haven’t followed it

Actually Dinklage spoke out when he thought the movie would feature little people in the roles of the dwarves. This was the quote from him back in February 2022: "Literally no offense to anything, but I was sort of taken aback. They were very proud to cast a Latino actress as Snow White, but you’re still telling the story of ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.’ Take a step back and look at what you’re doing there. It makes no sense to me. You’re progressive in one way, but you’re still making that fucking backward story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together. Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soapbox? I guess I’m not loud enough.”

Dinklage has become too full of himself, frankly.

And some people here don't get that the name Snow White originally had nothing to do with race????

I don’t know why people struggle so much to acknowledge that this is a significantly reworked adaptation of the fairytale. There are many aspects of the story that would need to change for a modern adaptation anyway. Reworking the fairytale IS an artistic and creative choice, done for deliberate reasons by the writer(s) and producers of the show, even if many people don’t like it. Denying that there are changes doesn’t actually help the cause of the movie or what they’re trying to do it, which is a kind of reinvention of the classic.

Fairytales imo aren’t sacrosanct. Many are deeply troubling in what they depict particularly re: female sexuality, violence, misogyny. If you are used to exploring these themes like Greta Gerwig is, you will use the script as an opportunity to tease out these contradictions. Much as happened with Barbie in a different way.

Now, will the movie alienate many people due to loss of ‘nostalgia’ factor? Yes. Will the alternative presentation be so compelling as to draw in new and different audiences? That’s yet to be seen here.

Lastly, it seems obvious to me that the term Snow White originated  in the colour of the skin. I don’t care myself, but there’s no point pretending otherwise. Casting Zegler is a deliberate choice and a sign that the ‘rules’ of this story will be upturned.

Snow White - The Brothers Grimm (1812)

IT WAS the middle of winter, and the snow-flakes were falling like feathers from the sky, and a Queen sat at her window working, and her embroidery-frame was of ebony. And as she worked, gazing at times out on the snow, she pricked her finger, and there fell from it three drops of blood on the snow. And when she saw how bright and red it looked, she said to herself, “Oh that I had a child as white as snow, as red as blood, and as black as the wood of the embroidery frame!” Not very long after she had a daughter, with a skin as white as snow, lips as red as blood, and hair as black as ebony, and she was named Snow-white. And when she was born the Queen died.

So are people upset that a Queen was cast, when she's actually dead?

The thing about nostalgia for Snow White is that there is none. The Disney movie is 85 years old, beautifully animated, historically important for the field of animation, and...kinda boring! It's a classic in the sense that most people have probably seen it at some point, but only animation buffs probably like it much. Snow White the character is pretty obnoxious. She has a psychotic break in the woods and then spends the rest of the movie cleaning and cooking. She never exerts any agency. For the most part, the dwarves don't either. The only dynamic character is the Evil Queen. This isn't like the Renaissance films that carry a lot of millennial nostalgia and are still closely aligned enough with modern tastes that Disney can get away with recycling most of the story beats. This is a film that's about 50% dwarf slapstick comedy that would likely bore modern audiences.

In terms of IP, Snow White is like Robin Hood, everyone knows what it is, but no one is that interested in seeing another film with that character. That's really going to be the uphill battle that this film faces. It has to reinvent the material for a disinterested audience. The leaked stuff doesn't look that promising, honestly, but I guess we'll see.
