While I do agree that activism is necessary, especially in these days that we're living in. The thing is becoming a mess, only this year we already had the Dog's controversy, everybody jumping in the hate train thanks to an edited video, and now this GITS mess, I mean, if the people that should be pissed with this situation (Japanese), understands why they choose Scarlett, why the hell an American critic would bother about it? This is just ridiculous.

You forgot Passengers was statutory rape too.

But is "white washing" the main complaint from American critics?

I thought the storytelling was considered mediocre outside of the visuals.

The main, not. But they implied that this is a negative part of the movie. I don't know how much it affects in their opinion about the movie.

I would love to see a Japanese doing this role, but that's not how Hollywood works. Movies are made to make money, not charity.
This film with a unknown Japanese actress probably would do Cloud Atlas's numbers.

Is this a "Warcraft is pretty good" Stockholm syndrome thing or is GitS actually pretty good?

Idk, I'll wait for @MrPink to weigh in

I'm seeing GITS tonight (if boss baby ends up being too busy and I don't want to sit in a theatre with a bunch of whiny kids)

If it is as good as Warcraft IMO I'll be happy

I'm not sure I fully agree with that reasoning, most Japanese will not be bothered much by what Hollywood do on that aspect, they have what 300 to 400 Japanese movie featuring almost exclusively Japanese actor released in their theater every year, for a while Japanese cinema had an output has big as Hollywood and was always big. The subject lack of Japanese representation on screen would not make the first sense to them, try to imagine white american caring about who play Jason Bourne in a Japanese remake for an equivalent.... they will never watch it anyway and just watch the next Damon one.

It is much more Japanese/eastern Asians outside Japan (mostly US because they feel connection with the US movie industry) that has some chance to care about something like that.

I watched Shin Godzilla recently, and they had a Japanese actress be the American ambassador to Japan. It was hilarious because she could not even speak English correctly and we are to believe she wants to be the President of the US someday

I don't know what the critics want out of a story to be honest. If you're going to call a thoughtful sci-fi movie with existentialist themes that explores the future of technology "empty" and "shallow" and low on plot, really what does that leave? But meanwhile mopey bullshit that sucks in every way a movie can suck like Manchester or Boyhood gets their approval.

Ghost in the Shell was far from mediocre. Outside of John Wick 2, it was the year's best movie and a definite A rating. Visually one of the best movies I've seen and a joy to watch. People may not give it a chance, but they should.

And LOL at the Power Rangers decline, guess the little kids had their fill and it's on to Boss Baby. It's too easy to root against movies that look THAT shitty! Yikes.

Ps: No we don't need "activist" social justice warriors behind their keyboards playing the PC police. These people are the scum of the earth. There's nothing worse than a fucking social justice warrior making a big issue out of everything and trying to instigate 1984 in reality. People are sick of their bullshit!

Image result for why every time you speak

Now I don't want to associate myself with liking GITS.

Yes, I'm sure that critics are only giving it a bad review because of whitewashing, despite every one of them also pointing out that it's a bland, empty movie with a generic plot and forgettable characters. But sure, it's just the PC liberals ruining your newest fanwank from getting great reviews.

Also, I love how people are saying "This is a business, that's why they had to change it!" when mostly these EXACT same people are the guys complaining when Captain America's suit has one extra stripe on it and saying that filmmakers "don't get the material" and that movies are gonna flop because of it. Uh huh, sure. The circle of fanboy life continues.

GITS had the best futuristic world since, Minority Report ?

Think so.

Each shot is production design porn, I was pleased.

Scarjo face acting was on point too, no joking, thought she was pretty terrific in a very difficult part to pull off.

I haven't seen GITS and don't plan on it but I've seen a shitton of marketing material in theaters and TV and I think that every future landscape looks like a cutscene from a 1990s Playstation RPG, but I guess that my opinion is invalid and really I think it looks crappy because I'm a social justice warrior.

i'm not gonna see ghost in the shell i think. it's kinda like beast where it just looks like a redo where it's all "don't you wanna see the same thing but slightly worse?" and to be honest i didn't even like the original cartoon. very overhyped like a lot of japanese cartoons.

For those of you suffering from Warcraft Stockholm syndrome there are therapists that will help you with that. If you're in America they'll also destroy you financially but what are ya gonna do

Great, now we're probably gonna get a bunch of dudes saying "Actually, it's not a cartoon - it's an anime." These guys just can't accept they love a fucking cartoon. It's cool, man. Lion King is dope.
