Actually that is a hideous, and completely inaccurate, measure of greatness. $$$ is a measure of nothing more than popularity, and as each year ticks by popularity can be more an more manipulated by marketing and the perpetual dumbing down of entertainment audiences.

Populist arguments are instantly, easily destroyed. Britney Spears, a woman with absolutely zero musical talent and a completely manufactured catalog, has sold more records globally than Bjork, Kate Bush, Joni Mitchell, Janis Joplin, Tori Amos, PJ Harvey and Joan Baez combined. Is Britney a greater artist than any of them or all of them combined? No.

Just because she’s pop fun doesn’t mean she’s not talented. Her songs are super catchy and I always feel happy when listening to them. The fact that she overcame mental illness (at some point people were worried she wouldn’t live past a month) and still continues to perform is impressive.

The reading comprehension in here is lacking. I simply said the only objective measure for film-maker greatness is money made, the rest is opinions. For instance I can say movie X made more than movie Y, and that's a fact. Whereas if you were to say movie X was better than movie Y it's an opinion. I shouldn't have to explain this but I suppose it's in everyone's interest to paint what I say differently then laugh at it!

It's not too long until Jim will be the highest grossing director of all time with a 1/3rd of the amount of films, just 2021 actually.

And again, that is complete bullshit.

You call that performing? Lipping every note while playing no instruments and sleepwalking through basic choreography? And no, she has zero musical talent.

It's complete bullshit because numbers can't the numbers can't be trusted? Begs the question why you're here on a box office theory forum.

You can measure box office gross and can't measure opinions, which is my point so try not try stray too far away from it. Debating about the definition of greatness isn't really that interesting to me.

Midnight (ish) update:

Westworld:              2,301k [newly tracking, must have been glitched before as well]

Jurassic World:         1,976k [+769k]

Infinity War:            1,833k [+832k (10:30pm)]

Mission Impossible:  1,605k [+863k]

Not really that unexpected to see Solo at the top of the list, as this IS the first look at it.  Really should be #1 of all of the trailers/teasers, all things considered.

Am glad MI is doing so well. That was a quality trailer. As if Cruise wanted the marketing to be the exact opposite of Mummy.

IW doing big as expected.

Am glad JW is keeping pace. So many folks are predicting closer to 400 than 500 and hope that's not true.

True. MI also doing big numbers in part because of that. Solo's views are 58% higher than MI. I thought it should be doing double.

I dont like her but anyone who was young in the late 90s knows the lyrics of Hit me Baby One more time by heart lol

So frankly, I may not like her music but she achieved far greater success from her very catchy fun songs.

What is Phantom Thread's potential? Even with the BP nom I don't think 25m+ dom will happen. Could end around All The Money In The World. Shape of Water, Darkest Hour, Lady Bird will end up much higher. Tonya, with 11m prod budget, should do 30m dom.

Any idea round what the prod budget was?

2017/12/29 26 $216,495   4 $54,124   $527,840 1

Insidious4 will fall just short of 70 dom it seems. Great for a 4th movie of a horror franchise where the previous ones did 54, 84, 52 (in order of release).

2018/01/05 2 $29,581,355   3,116 $9,493   $29,581,355 1
2018/01/12 5 $12,419,715 -58% 3,150 $3,943   $48,660,855 2

Ferdinand

2018/02/02 24 $640,000 -37% 575 $1,113   $81,404,633 8

Domestic Box Office $81,404,633 Details
International Box Office $186,988,511 Details
Worldwide Box Office $268,393,144

Will add ~1.5m dom with the dollar bump. Don't know how much it has left OS but OS salvaged the 111m production.

Should top out at 20m. After the BP nom I was hoping it would pass Boogie Nights' 26.4m for PTA's second biggest grosser but alas.
