Just so happens Hisaishi will be in the US during the Oscars nomination voting period (he has concerts in Seattle in January)... would be nice if he could squeeze in some sort of campaign thing while he's in the country. Across the Spider-Verse did a whole orchestral concert at the Academy Museum, that's the marketing competition he's up against here.

Compared to Miyazaki, hisaishi is more open for promotion in the west. He has multiple concerts going around in USA and UK in the past two years which probably bolster his fame among music elite. My worry is that it seems like GKIDS singular focus is on best animated feature until they lost sight of how much opportunity they can explore beyond just one category.

It is time to really push hisaishi on the front of the campaign since the Oscar shortlist is coming due soon.

@MovieMan89 Prayers were answered. Nominated for "Best Picture" at Florida Film Critics Circle.

I really have no familiarity with that org, but it’s incredibly awesome to see a BP nom for it in a cat of only 5, and especially those others it’s nominated with!

Not to dive in because of spoilers, but I’m 99% sure the “messiness” of the plot is on purpose and meant to augment what Miyazaki was trying to achieve with this. I for one think it works incredibly well. It’s also not like he has ever stuck to traditional narratives, Spirited Away could be called all over the place and the ending “messy” if we’re going by traditional Hollywood act structure. But it works for that film.

Beautifully Animated, but a bit disappointing. The Story and Narrative were all over the place. They were spraying bullets with Storm Trooper precision.

I think Miyazaki intentionally did that.

I mean the old man already made many crowd pleasure films before, he knows the formula.

So this time, he would not accidently do that unless it has a I purpose....

Gotta admit, I don’t understand how this got shut out of all the big cats for Critic Choice when it’s one of the most critically acclaimed movies in years, especially if we’re just focusing on top critics… 9.1 and 92 meta are insane

Critics choice awards just try to predict the Oscar's and aren't actually representative of critics. You're gonna have to look at regional critics awards instead

I think part of the issue for some here is probably that if you don’t have a deep love and understanding of Miyazaki’s filmography and his themes and beliefs, this isn’t going to resonate the same way. It’s very much a movie about him personally and what he wants to leave behind in his life and his art. Once you realize/understand that background, the narrative clicks pretty easily imo, despite being untraditional.

I'm leaning more towards positive, and while the film's themes may stand out for a good portion, it does have a tendency to collapse under its own weight. Some of the imagery is stunningly beautiful - there are shots that completely blew me away. It's very interesting, and I am interested in revisiting it.

I hope this is not his final film.

Personally Speaking, I don't have Spirited Away in my upper echelon of Studio Ghibli Movies. Off the top of my head, I would say Princess Mononoke, Grave of the Fireflies, Nausicaa: Valley of the Wind, and Wind Rises would best it in my list.

The Wind Rises would have been a more fitting send off for Miyazaki than this.

Well I haven't seen Wind Rises but this seems like as good of a send off as any. But Miyazaki is supposedly working on another movie now so who knows what that will be.
