After more than three months of coronavirus-mandated limbo, Hollywood is headed back to the big screen -- and hoping that Russell Crowe's road rage thriller "Unhinged" will jump-start the recovery.

The action film, due out July 10, is set to be the first wide release since US theaters shut their doors in mid-March.

Solstice Studios has finalized deals with key offshore distributors to bring psychological thriller Unhinged to cinemas across the world. The Russell Crowe-starrer, which has a domestic date of July 10, has set deals in the UK, Europe, Australia, Asia and Latin America. Directed by Derrick Borte, the road rage movie will see rollout in the UK on July 17 via Altitude Films, becoming the first significant new release there post-lockdown.

“It is a privilege to be working with the top independent distribution companies around the world on our first feature,” said Solstice’s Acquisitions & International Head Crystal Bourbeau. “The film’s tremendous reception is a true testament to its universal relatability and global appeal. We are thrilled to be bringing Unhinged to cinemas worldwide with these partners, giving audiences everywhere a good reminder of why they love going to the movies.”

It's really eye opening that even small budget films are reacting to the deteriorating conditions in the US and pushing back dates. I still believe Unhinged will open in the US this summer. If nothing else it can play at drive-in locations and in markets with low COVID numbers. If it is going to proceed opening internationally (and why not) then it should drop here as well.

Major summer blockbusters Unhinged, Tenet and Mulan could move again:

I hear that after July 4, there will be another assessment by studios and the big circuits as to whether the current lineup of movies –Solstice Studios’ Unhinged, TriStar’s Broken Hearts Gallery, Warner Bros.’ Tenet and Disney’s Mulan– moves again as a block in another two week delay for each film as more COVID-19 data unveils itself. As such it would not come as a shocker if the current August release schedule slides into September.

Any numbers from Germany?

#1 with a box office of 220k € and an audience of 27k in 384 theatres (finally, most theatres have reopened again). That's not too bad given the circumstances.

Opening weekend is here. Tickets are now on sale.

Look at all the screenings. Even 4DX.

We still have 20% of the cinemas shut with the Victoria lockdown. (Worst day yet yesterday)

This is what the last full week looked like with a new opening film.

While Universal’s Dolittle and Warner Bros’ reissue of Interstellar were the big kahunas in China this weekend, Russell Crowe-starrer Unhinged hit the road in 19 new markets over the session. Among them, the UK, Australia, Netherlands and New Zealand where the Solstice Studios pic was No. 1. They joined Germany which kicked off two frames ago. In total, Unhinged took the No. 1 position in 11 markets this weekend which overall was worth $2.17M in 20 for a $2.9M international box office cume to date.

As one international exec recently told me, “We are definitely in need of new and attractive content.” That’s been the refrain across the past several weeks as cinemas in Asia and Europe have reopened, and it’s been borne out by the performances of fresh fare. While numbers may seem meager, they are significantly affected by capacity and screening limits. There is certainly hope on the horizon as we only have three weeks to wait before WB starts international rollout on Christopher Nolan’s Tenet.
