@TigerPaw how will Taiwan & Hong Kong respond. Does Tony Leung have box office clout?

I don't think there should be any anti-chinese thing.

Tony Leung has historically not been a box office draw; he is well known in these markets but he has never been a known box office draw. But to be fair, it is also because of the quality of the films he participated in - for the last 10yrs or so.

Tony Leung and his wife Carina Lau both are supporters of the Chinese Communist Party; his wife is more public about it due to her activeness on social media. So a lot of people don’t really know Tony Leung’s political stance. And from what I am seeing; political factors shouldn’t impact box office that much - we have seen how Fast9 perform in these countries despite John Cena’s words (and piracy due to its delayed release in Taiwan).

I mean there are some hurdles to cross as some people feel that Simu Lui looks like Xin Ji Ping, and some feel that Hong Kong and Taiwan’s own stars like Nicholas Tse, Eddie Peng, Daniel Wu could have easily taken the role instead. (I am sure you have seen the dislikes for the first trailer on YouTube)

If there is one thing I learn - that is that online sentiments don’t actually impact box office potential. Not just in HK and Taiwan, but even in China.

MCU is a big brand in these countries and I genuinely think doesn’t matter Simu / Tony whoever stars in this, people will still flock to MCU movies. Any nay- sayers will still give it a chance in the 2nd weekend if word of mouth is okay.

I would expect at least (due to no PA / piracy) BW numbers in HK, and for Taiwan if it doesn’t do that well it is because box office is still recovering.

$55M+ weekend looking good depending on UK and Mexico numbers.

Sorry if it's a dumb question but when it come from international numbers i never know well how they work.

It's 55M for the weekend alone, or including the 10.5M "previews" grossed where it get released early?
