The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread (December 2021 - July 2023)

March feels like it's going to be a fun month (both in terms of following the box office and actually seeing the movies)! Let's hope most of the offerings surpass expectations.

 

Also really interested in presales for John Wick when they start. I'm a little less bullish on it than I was. I don't know, the vibe from the marketing isn't quite hitting with me. Not to the extent that I'm not interested anymore - that's hardly the case - but it feels like it's lacking the earnestness of the first two. You felt like John Wick had a reason to be going out there and kicking ass but at this point it feels like he's out there kicking ass because they need a movie.

 

Hopefully my concerns are unwarranted and there is still enough story to go along with the action.

I've been pretty excited about this month. Post pandemic, we've never had a month with more than 3 films crossing the $100M mark, which we stand a good chance of surpassing. But everything also has some risk to it.

 

It's far more interesting than you'd expect for a the month of March.

I had to double check those van numbers in comparison to Calgary, wow they were selling well 3 weeks out.

Yep, a hundred times this. I've been ascribed so many things I didn't actually say because one comment gradually turned into another as it was passed from person to person.

 

And let's also remember, test screenings are test screenings. Just because an audience loves or hates an early version of a movie doesn't mean the mainstream will agree come the final product.

Remember when I said DEADPOOL 2 had troubling scores? It did! And they fixed it.

Remember when I said HALLOWEEN KILLS scored way higher than HALLOWEEN 2018? It did! But then mainstream audiences disagreed.

 

To me, test screenings are a fun peek into the process. I only commented on AQUAMAN 2 because there had been quite a few previews and the reactions I was hearing were consistent. But it's still ten months away from release, there's plenty of time to work on the film if it needs surgery.

A source of mine said the ingested file's runtime for the Mystery Movie lines up with Champions almost exactly. He seems pretty certain that's what the movie is. Unlike previous Mystery Movies, no codename was given for this one, so it'll be a little harder to pinpoint these exactly from now on.

 

I'm assuming @Eric Bear and @ringedmortality might be interested in this information as well since they've asked about these in the past.

I think he's right, the film looks like it's Champions.

 

If 65 was the Mystery Movie it would've played in RPX like Spirited and Missing, but I heard on Twitter that the Mystery Movie will be 2D only.
