The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread (December 2021 - July 2023)

Good sign that Box Office Pro hasn't adjusted their long-range forecasting in the wake of presales, or does that just mean they haven't factored them in yet?

Presales are pretty much in line with their prediction, so they doesn't need to change it.

It's only the first day of course, but 135M seems like a reasonable bet. Let's see the next weeks to know if it can go higher (and how much higher), or lower.

The Batman

MTC2 previews (T - 21) - 26119/516534 357210.74 3393 shows

It took a while to run and this is as of 11PM PST yesterday. BW did about 20K in 24 hours. Eternals was way lower. NWH was in stratosphere :-). I would say its not bad. let us see how the PS goes as we build hype with reactions, reviews and tv spots =.

Is previews inclusive of Tuesday and Wednesday or only Thursday. Because this is a weird rollout with those additional 2 showings.

Just thursday. Tuesday there were just 14 shows at MTC2. Mostly sold out(last checked it was around 3200 tickets). Wednesday I have not checked yet for any shows but it will be negligible.

Is MTC2 Regal? Because they have both in SoCal. Wednesday is Regal RPX, Tuesday is IMAX. If it's Cinemark, then I think they only have Wednesday, not sure.

No, Wed also has RPX, 4DX and XD showings. Remember, I have no AMCs locally but had a ton of Wed sales to report.

After 6 hours of presales, The Batman is at 166 tickets sold for Thursday and still at 146 for Tuesday. All but 6 Thursday tickets are in the Dolby or IMAX.

Alrighty after 24 hours we have the following numbers. Tuesday remains the same at 146 (IMAX).

The Batman - 24HR’s of Presales

28 showtimes, 215 tickets sold, 195 IMAX/Dolby, 20 Regular

I don’t have any 24 hour comps at this point (my earliest is 41.5 hours for NWH @ 2039) buuuuuttt I’m pretty underwhelmed by these numbers, TBH. I suspect an equivalent number of hours VS my NWH comp would be about 13-14% or so (minus early screening. 21% with it). I was hoping for 25-35%. Obviously the early screenings will skew things but the hardcore PLF ratio is also giving me pause.

The precipitous drop off in sales as the weekend continues is a bit of a concern. To go from 5x Eternals Thursday to less than 3/4 for Sunday is….odd.

Obviously I’m not going to read munch into it at this juncture but it is worth noting.

No Tuesday or Wednesday showings here. Given the nature of Drafthouse, I think a stronger comp against NWH is expected. There tends to be more of a rush to get tickets

Yeah it's a bit weird, but Eternals presales didn't start off as frontloaded. Its Thurs+Fri was 3.58x Sat+Sun, meanwhile NWH was 5.13x and Batman is 4.90x. Which I think makes sense considering people wouldn't be as worried about seeing Eternals ASAP as they would for Spider-Man or Batman.

Not too bad, but I feel like I could've just looked at the PLF and 7pm shows to get most of those sales.  Here's what Spider-man looked like at the 9hr mark.

Day Movie Area Theaters Shows Total Seats Total Sold New Sales % Sold
T-17 Spider-Man Jacksonville 7 72 12,424 2,330 2,330 18.75%

  Spider-Man Total   20 173 29,193 7,810 7,810 26.75%

Clearly not in the same ballpark, but the showtime difference is massive.  First run took nearly an hour with so many shows; I probably won't be able to do that every day.  I'll try to get a run at Santikos in the morning for a similar time comp for Spider-man.  Showtime report will hopefully be up tomorrow as well if I have time.

Personally, I would just comp Thursday, and then add about 4M to the comp (Tuesday will likely be a bit more than 2M, and Wednesday a bit less than that, so 4M between the 2 days sounds right)
