I didn't watch the Grammys last night but this sounds about right as to what's wrong with the Oscars these days:

Quote

If you had to pinpoint a moment at which it was completely clear that the Grammys would be a much happier experience than the Oscars a week ago, ironically, it was during the saddest moment of the show. That would be the traditional In Memoriam segment, which, at the Academy Awards, wound up being one of the most WTF moments on a pretty much WTF night. The Oscars’ producers decided that the traditionally solemn parade of the dearly departed should have, as score, “Spirit in the Sky,” an irreverent rock oldie that has always been understood as highly whimsical, if not sarcastic. Huh? Meanwhile, the Grammys went with a moving medley of wistful Stephen Sondheim classics sung by Rachel Zegler, Cynthia Erivo, Ben Platt and Leslie Odom Jr.

Grammys Remind Us We Don't Have to Hate Awards Shows: TV Review - Variety

When you get the moment of the show that should be the easiest thing to go right completely wrong, as the Oscars have done more than once in recent years (just bring back a performer singing a sad song), it's time they need to rethink how they approach things.

But Amy said she was soooo "traumatized" by The Slap...

A woman actually died on a film set... Alec Baldwin wasn't even in Don't Look Up? If this is the kind of joke that edgelord comedians aren't "allowed" to tell anymore...good.

Feels like the Oscars is not the right time to joke about film crew members being killed in an on set accident. Whoever edited her monologue did a great job because they kept the only jokes which got laughs.

Amy's Rust "joke" is awful and tasteless and was rightly axed, but to be honest most of the attempts at humor during the ceremony bombed in ways even the anti-cancel culture crowd would find cringe if they actually watched the show. Was that diss towards The Last Duel, of all movies, supposed to be funny? If so, who was the intended target audience for the joke? No one, as far as I can tell.

Comedy is generally in a rut right now

A lot of comedians play it very safe in their content but the reality is the best comedy is the absurd but if one is worried about what they say then it likely wont be really absurd ?

A lot of comedians try to go against cancel culture and instead of just making good jokes just say stuff to outrage or offend then is actually funnny.

Late night comedians are generally out of ideas as they had easy material for 5 years due To Trump and have alienated a lot of their mass appeal by becoming fully politics based. That is why their ratings have nosedived.

Then a lot of the famous other comedians have been likely cancelled by #metoo.

I don't know; I see an awful lot of "Shock" comedy where it is all about the shock and they forget to be funny.

True andrew Shultz is one of the better comedians who is shocking and funny.

It sort of works best if its ab libbed usually he just roasts his audience.

Usually requires a huge amout of witt

I think its mainly American comedy that's suffering right now.

Jim Jefferies is my go to at the moment. He's one of those guys that can say anything and still come across as funny and likable

The verdict is in:

Will keeps his Oscar because the Academy was never going to open that can of worms...

Wondering if he ever did get it engraved that night, or does the AMPAS mail him the trophy plaque or his Oscar is just going to remain blank forever? Obviously not his biggest problem at the moment...

In modern days it is plaque (premade for all possible winner before the show) put on them right after I think at the governor ball after party.

Will Smith deserved some discipline but how did Will Packer get off without consequence??

I mean, what is there to discipline him for? The most they can do is just not invite him back to produce the show (which, given the poor reviews for the telecast overall, already seems likely).

Surprised by a decade-long ban, but there wasn't much else they could do. They can't make someone give their Oscars back and Smith already resigned. You can't just physically and verbally assault someone on live TV (no matter who you are or whatever the circumstances) and not expect there to be consequences.

He was producer of the show, allowed Smith to return to his seat and remain at theater, and also lied publicly about contacting Chris Rock and lied about the security on national television. He poorly handled this situation yet not even a mention from the Academy condemning his handling. Feels very strange.

Given that Packer was already the one who was forced to do their damage control for all the controversies related to the telecast during the weeks before the big night, it wouldn't be much of a surprise if behind closed doors they've all just made an agreement to never collaborate again and leave it at that.
