At the center of one of the coolest and innovate films in cinematic history is a simple love story:  Girl Meets Boy.  Girl Loves Boy.  Boy Reveals He Is Not The One.  Girl Reveals Is The One Because She Believes He's The One.  Boy is The One.

 

I want to say I just rewatched all of these recently four so they kind of bleed together, sorry if there's vague spoilers for Resurrections: I'm struggling with talking about them without talking about the ending for Resurrections cause that ending just tied the entire series together, and I felt like it enriched Neo and Trinity's relationship in the previous series, and it helped redefine it in such a powerful way, because it equalizes their agency and builds this bond that freely flows between the two characters, so much that they almost become one.

 

Plus, you know, Keanu Reeves and Carrie Anne Moss in Latex/Leather.

Prompt: Ilsa and Rick aren't together yet, but they like each other and they are mutuals on twitter/tumblr.  Rick accidentally publishes a tweet about their crush on Ilsa on their main account, when they meant to put it on a private side account.  Ilsa is too dense to realize it's obviously about them, but it still worries them enough to ask a mortified Rick about it.

The fundamental things apply, 

 

as time goes by.

 

You google "greatest film love story of all time" and this is literally the first entry that pops up.  Hundreds of people way smarter than me have written hundreds of words most poetic than me about Rick and Ilsa.  About their tragic romance, their selfless decisions to put duty before their wants.

 

They started production on this film just months after The Attack on Pearl Attack, and the you can feel the undercurrent of angst and uncertainty closing in on Rick and Ilsa, first in Paris then in Casablanca.  Perhaps that's why the film still feels as fresh and urgent as before.

Just like when The Dark Knight won the Top 30 Comic Book Movies of All Time, this wasn't even a contest.  In basically an unanimous decision for this board, Jack and Rose appeared on 13 of 15 lists, and had a sold 14.5 points MORE than Casablanca.

 

This is type of "original", three hour, epic romance is truly the last of its breed; and maybe only James Cameron could've brought us this film.  The story is simple.  Rich girl, poor boy, whirlwind romance on a doomed ocean liner.  It's perfectly captures the wonder and ridiculousness of Hollywood storytelling.

 

I don't know if your youngsters truly remember when this film came out.  The cultural impact is staggering.  There was a time when Leo wasn't an instant turn off.  Truly amazing.  I think this is the first movie I saw more than one time at the movie theaters.  It made a staggering 659M at the domestic box office, 2.2M internationally total, and 11 Academy Award wins out of 14 nominations. Everyone had the TWO VHS TAPE version of this under their TV stand.

 

There was endless, endless debate about if they both could've gotten on that raft.

 

 

And the song we could not escape:

 

 

For Millennials this our Casablanca.  This is our Bonnie and Clyde.  Our Han and Leia.  

 

And it takes its rightful place as the Greatest Ship of All Time.

I have to say, I think the Top 69 Canon List is really rad.  It's a solid mix of old and new classics, superhero and art house, Hollywood and International, live action and animated. The top three is very worthy (imo).  Not sure why you thought I'd have a problem with Casablanca.  Not at all.  Didn't make my list, but that doesnt mean I hate the film or the placing of the "ship".  And of course Titanic had to be number one.  It's just simply the best.
