BO Germany/Austria: Dune first 2024 blockbuster (3mil admissions)

Recommended Posts

First trend for Germany's weekend:

#1: HiK (what else) - 350k admissions (-5%)

#2: BH6 - 225k (-20%)

#3: FF4 - 150k (-15%)

#4 and best opener: Jupiter Ascending with about 125k; Interview might make it to the 100k line.

It's now holidays in many parts of Germany, so good holds for family stuff are expected, but a less-than-5%-drop for the adult-skewing "Honig im Kopf" would be just plain  :mouthdropped:

last estimates for the weekend:

#1: HiK - 310k admissions (-15%, sounds more sensible)

#2: BH6 - 210k (-25%, not so good)

#3: JA - 145k (went up from earlier estimates, so some walk-in business I guess; still not stellar)

#4: FF4 - 140k (-20%, will need better holds to reach the million)

#5: FMmw - 105k (-5%, a million is locked)

#6: Interview - 90k (very good considering the fact it's been available online for a while now)

#7: JW - 85k (-40%, not too good)

#8: IG - 75k (-20%)

#9: Blackhat - 60k - ugh

btw, here's the link to Germany's market data for the past years at the FilmFörderungsAnstalt:

http://www.ffa.de/index.php?page=marktdaten

As we already knew, 2014 was one of the worst years in recent history (in Austria it was even worse). Two positive aspects of an overall shitty 2014: Domestic films had a slightly bigger market share than in 2013 (in fact, the biggest share of the last 5 years, but still below 30%), and the 3D share was a bit down from 2013.

So, FF4 is a Famous Five adaptation? Is it being distributed outside of Germany? Is it successful?

Enid Blyton's works are really nostalgic.

It is mildly successful in Germany, in a very reliable way, every entry in the franchise does similar numbers, and production costs are low (sub-5mil €). I think they get released in german-speaking countries exclusively. btw, there's another german Blytonesque franchise, "Hanni und Nanni" (based on Blyton's "St. Clare's" series) which does nearly exactly the same numbers.

Thanks for the info. I would not mind seeing the adaptations - how it got translated to the current world.

Need something in English, though :)

And I complain about how low is the attendance in my country... that is a lower average tickets per person than in Spain  :o

Germany's been lower than Spain on that front for a long time.

How many tickets in Spain last year?

The openers: flop to disappointment territory, with the exception of "The Interview".

The holdovers: "Honig im Kopf" still very strong, crossed 5mil total this weekend and shows few signs of slowing down. "Hobbit 3", while out of the Top20 by now, crossed 6mil total on Tuesday and is still ahead of DoS by about 80k admissions. BH6 had the steepest drop among family stuff, still an ok weekend and crossed 1mil total. Paddington gets much closer to the 2mil mark than I expected, strong run!

Next weekend: 50SoG and little else (Statham in "Wild Card" - poor guy). The question is not if the SM romance will smash the competition but by how much. The screen loss alone will hurt "Honig im Kopf" quite a bit and other movies a lot harder. Family stuff however should hold well, no new competition and I guess 50SoG will not have that many afternoon shows.

It was a slow year, but of course Hobbit3 has crossed 6mil by now and Honig im Kopf will do so in three weeks I guess. Movies that have admissions in two different years (basically, all Nov/Dec releases and some Oct ones) are misrepresented in these lists.

Here's the list to insidekino's yearly charts by release date: http://www.insidekino.de/DBO.htm#JAHRES_&_ALL-TIME_CHARTS_

and here's the list for 2014 (last weekend still missing as of now): http://www.insidekino.de/DJahr/D2014.htm

Germany's been lower than Spain on that front for a long time.

How many tickets in Spain last year?

86.93 million admissions and 6 euros average ticket price. Total market: €522m. Ticket average ticket price has dropped about 0.5 € relative to 2013.

I could imagine a lower average ticket per person in Germany, but not a so lower, considering the Spanish box office crisis.

Average ticket price in Germany for 2014: 8,05€

(2013: 7,89, 2012: 7,65 ... you get the idea)

In France, they introduced a new cheaper-ticket program for youths in 2014 and they got a 5% rise in admissions iirc. In Germany and Austria, they fight dropping admissions with higher prices ... maybe one of the bigger players wakes up one day and tries something "new", like maybe in France?.

The way I think of it is that Spain's got a lot further to fall in average admissions and the current crisis is taking it down closer to Germany's level. It's already so low in Germany that it isn't going to fall much further. The situation is the same as Japan and any fluctuation in admissions there, as with Germany, is more dependent on the product than it is in other countries with higher average attendance.

Yes. We had the problem of prices in past years. Incredible rising of prices even although salaries were lower. We have had initiatives like Fiesta del Cine (can be translated as Movie's party), where two periods of Monday-Wednesday along the year (in April and in October), tickets were at 2.90€ for everyone. In both 3-days periods, about 2 million admissions were sold. 4 million out 87 total yearly in just 6 laborable days. When prices become attractive people keep going to cinemas. Maybe, like in the French example that you mention, that is the way to make people come back to theaters.

first trend for Germany's weekend:

#1: 50SoG - 1,3mil admissions (best Feb opening but below my expectations)

#2: HiK - 275k (-15%, thought it would drop more thanks to few screens)

#3: BH6 - 175k (-15%, ok but now holidays are mostly over)

#4: FF4 - 125k (-10% - that's the kind of drosp it needs to reach the million!)
