I certainly was - but in Germany 5th in admissions in 2019, but at least 2nd in €. And in € it is the 26th biggest movie ever (when it was released it was 23rd place has been passed by The Rise of Skywalker, No Time to Die and Avatar 2 since then).

Black Panther is the first MCU movie to gross less than its predecessor (in admissions and €). #12 last year (in admissions) - below Uncharted and barely above Sing 2.

The source material of both were absolutely gigantic though - I'd say at least a couple steps ahead of Game of Thrones. For Harry Potter and lord of the Rings both the books and movies were insanely popular, for Game of Thrones the books were popular but the show as was far bigger.

It certainly hasn't helped that the movies Hollywood produces don't really line up with German tastes anymore. Germany was really into comedies, especially romantic ones. They are all but gone now. Fantasy movies? Pretty rare these days, and for the most part either sequels or to material that isn't that well known here. Animated tentpoles? All but gone, all that is left are the 5th sequel to a once well-received franchise, or a multitude of rather generic animations.

 

Marvel has certainly grown a lot over the last few years, but that's still just going from "nobody cares" to decent, and with the the biggest one like Endgame to "preyy big hit". A far cry from what you can see elsewhere. And if that's supposed to be the biggest movies around, you are kind of screwed.

 

And as has been mentioned on insidekino again and again, and I think Mark G. also told it countless times in speeches in front of studio-managers: the schedules are simply horrendous.

With worldwide releases being common these days, the whole thing runs counter to the way German cinema works. Here winter is the best time to release movies, it's the time where audiences are prepared to spend indoors as the weather just doesn't cut it. Sadly it is also the time Hollywood has little to offer outside of the recent trend to big christmas releases. To make matters worse, the studios also don't drop big German releases either, so they largely waste the best time of the year.

 

And to top things off, they also couldn't be bothered to use common sense and avpoid competition. You will see two decently sized animated movies aimed at kids come out one week apart, only for none of this type to arrive over the next few months. People will go out and see a movie if you have something interesting to offer, but many weeks are wasted because there's just nothing with decent hype coming out as all studios try to cram their best movies into a few condensed months.

I think with all this we can say that these 4 steps could potentially help the german box office/theaters immensely:

 

1. Make tickets and theater food like popcorn etc cheaper. Yes, making things cheaper seems counterproductive on surface, but if theatergoing will get cheaper, more and more people here will be willing to watch movies because they can finally afford it. Especially familys.

 

2. A better schedules for all movies. More movies in the winter/Holidy season pls! Less big movies in the summer, more in the Fall and Spring! Its in the summer when its hot and sunny where most germans prefer pretty much every outdoor activity more than going to the theaters. This doesnt mean no summer releases ofc, but just less and more spread-out, so they dont cannibalize each other.

 

3. Stop the 3D nonsense.

 

4. This is not directed at Hollywood, this is directed at the afwul state of german filmmaking: Make better movies!

I unironically think an Ant-Man soft porn movie (maybe "Ant-Man in the Wasp: Quanten-Titten" (english: Quantum- well, you probably know) would perform a lot better than what the real Ant-Man 3 will do.

For non-german speakers that may be a little strange, but the german dubbing is actually one of the best in the world imo. Its always professional voice actors speaking the roles. This is just my personal opinion, but since i watch movies both in their original language with subs and with the german dub, there are actually some Hollywood movies that i think are improved with the german dub.

More like 95%+. Watching movies with subs is very uncommon for the general audiences here. Its mostly an offer for people who really dont want to watch movies dubbed and while that minority is very small, its also one that regularly goes to theaters. Otherwise, we probably would have fewer subs showings than we already have.

Number of shows for OV versions are small but OV with subtitles is almost non existant.

Ive been to a few of them (japanese films with german subs), but its definetly extremely hard to find and for the "normal" Hollywood imports they are indeed practically non-existent.

Which is a shame. Some people don't like subs but i like being able to read them when i miss some spoken words. Imagine listening to OV Bane in DKR...

Thats why i literally trained myself to watch movies in englisch in the OV as well as the german dub. Banes voice is a good example, its sometimes a bit hard to understand what Tom Hardy is mumbling, but the voice is just iconic.

Where are you that you get subtitels - I think the cinemas I've been to only show without subtitles and that's good (I find them rather annoying) - at least with English they seem to be rather rare.

in general, German dubbing leads to a much easier understandable movie - voices are mixed louder and music / background are a bit faded, compared to the original, plus most voice actors pronounce their text very clearly. It's extremely rare in a dubbed movie that you get mumbled or in any way hard-to-understand voices.

 

And yes, there are original shows with subtitles and ones without, those with usually in arthouses, those without in "normal" cinemas in cities with bigger english-speaking and/or student communities. At my cinema, Avatar2 as an example is playing 9 shows a day midweek and 10 Thu-Sun, and one show every day is the original version - sometimes in 3D on the biggest screen but also on smaller screens and 2D. As a rule, OVs are selling better per show, especially during opening week - but that's probably because there's so few of them so people get crammed in.

The Lord-of-the-Rings triple features every December are dubbed on the biggest screen and OV on a smaller one.
