BO Germany/Austria: Dune first 2024 blockbuster (3mil admissions)

I think with all this we can say that these 4 steps could potentially help the german box office/theaters immensely:

1. Make tickets and theater food like popcorn etc cheaper. Yes, making things cheaper seems counterproductive on surface, but if theatergoing will get cheaper, more and more people here will be willing to watch movies because they can finally afford it. Especially familys.

2. A better schedules for all movies. More movies in the winter/Holidy season pls! Less big movies in the summer, more in the Fall and Spring! Its in the summer when its hot and sunny where most germans prefer pretty much every outdoor activity more than going to the theaters. This doesnt mean no summer releases ofc, but just less and more spread-out, so they dont cannibalize each other.

3. Stop the 3D nonsense.

4. This is not directed at Hollywood, this is directed at the afwul state of german filmmaking: Make better movies!

Sadly with exception of No. 2 I think everything applies to many markets.

True, especially number No. 1.

Here in my city in Brazil, which is a very big capital city but in one of the poorest states in the country and thusfar a lot cheaper than Rio/São Paulo, if you buy one movie ticket to a 3D session at the weekend and a Popcorno/Soda combo, for example, you will probably spend something around R$70 to R$100 which is 5-7% of the minimum wage. Let alone the price you pay for parking at the shopping, gas (which to fill the tank you spend aprox. 23% of the minimum wage) and etc...

“The Way of Water” breaks the German cinema record

In Germany, “The Way of Water” managed the feat of even becoming the most successful film of 2022. In just two weeks, the blockbuster sold more tickets in this country than the previous leader “Minions – In Search of the Mini Boss”, which speaks volumes about the enormous interest in the film.

This is also clear in view of the latest record: the “Avatar” sequel defended first place in the cinema charts with outstanding revenues of 15.5 million euros thanks to 1.13 million tickets sold. No film has ever done that on its fourth weekend after the start. Unsurprisingly, James Cameron broke a record that he had previously set himself: “Titanic” had 1.07 million viewers and revenues of 7.2 million euros on the fourth weekend.

But you had terrible german sentence structure in the middle sentence. For german speakers, it reads more like:

"I have to say something, don't I? How there is no possibility, i should not. It is a must.

I mean it clears up the moment i saw your english version, but it was confusing haha. The english "like ... [...]" that often begins sentences doesnt have the same meaning in german, its not a 1:1 translation. "Wie" has a different meaning, depending on the context (most of the times, its an interrogative sentence).

Hör auf, Fakten zu spinnen. Ich hoffe, du lernst bald Deutsch.

Fun Fact: Im stuying history and german at my university. In a few years im actually teaching german at school so im confident in myself that i know a bit about german grammar :qotd:

Btw the "Fakten spinnen" is nonsense. You probabaly got that from the english "to spin facts" but the german equivalant to that is "Fakten verdrehen". The word "Spinnen" as a verb has a different meaning in german, its the english "spinning."

are you telling me multi-billion dollar company google lied to me?

Yes, i do. "Fakten spinnen" in the sense of the english "to spin facts" is not something any german would ever say lol.

Problem with Google Translator and other instant translation methods is often that they take words face-value and while that works in many cases, in others it fails hilariously because some words just dont have a 1:1 translation in other languages or cant be used in the same way as in the original language. One of my personal favourite examples is:

German: "Ich glaube, ich spinne!" to English: "I believe, i spider!"

This is a face-value direct translation of all the german words into english, but the german "ich spinne!" is in fact in english something like "im going crazy!" because it comes from the verb "spinnen" (english: similar to "beeing mad/crazy") and not the word "Spider" in the sense of the animal.

God im probably annoying everyone who wants to see box office numbers in this thread LOL

Slightly more than doubling the € - that's insane.

Wonderful weekend - nearly every release had some satisfying numbers! Operation Fortune opened much higher than the latest Guy Richie crime comedy, and The Banshees of Inisherin had a healthy PTA - as did Puss in Boots 2 which is making up for the depressed OW. And then there's Avatar 2 which is simply blowing everything out of the water - highest 4th weekend ever! 9mil total are a lock and 10mil in play … crazy! And congratulations to domestic children's book adaption Die Schule der magischen Tiere 2 which crossed 2,5mil total - a lot stronger than part 1 which was already considered a big success!

Once more, Austria's weekend was even better, Avatar is already past 700k here (the 4th weekend was actually its biggest to date), Puss and Fortune and Hotzenplotz were a lot stronger, too - so we had 4 releases >10k admissions.

Next weekend: Of course, with holidays now officially over, we have to get used to more "normal" numbers, but there's little doubt Avatar 2 will continue to draw in the crowds - can it come near 700k? The only "big" opener will be M3gan … and while there's no other horror release in theaters atm, there's very little breathing space in the evening - Top 3 would be a surprise.

As an aside - I have no idea what Disney is doing with Strange World … on a weekend where nearly every release increased (and family stuff even more so), this dropped again. Just sad.

As an aside - I have no idea what Disney is doing with Strange World … on a weekend where nearly every release increased (and family stuff even more so), this dropped again. Just sad.

I feel like the 10% rule for Austria hasn't really worked in the past year (Austria always did a little more than a tenth of the German box office - because the population is slightly more than a tenth of the German one: ~9m for Austria and 84.3m for Germany - so 10.7% and they were overall slightly more likely to go to the cinema the difference depending on the year being negligible or very small though).

2022 had big outliners like TGM (completely different worlds).

And right now most movies are ahead by quite a lot in Austria (PiB should probably be approaching 140k already (more than 40% ahead). Hotzenplotz above 85k etc. Black Panther is around 190k.

Right now Oskars Kleid seems to be the only exception.

RO had pretty awful late legs and only added around 1.5 its 4th weekend.

If we take TFA for example, Avatar would add another 2.78m and end its run with 9.29m - that should definitely be not too hard.

It it follow NWH it would add another 4.06m and end with 10.57m.

It definitely won't follow the original Avatar though, cause that added around 9.5times its 4th weekend and for Avatar 2 that would mean 10.59m and a 17.1m total. or if you see it differently it did a little more than double its 4th weekend total - even that would mean around 14m for Avatar 2.

Right now I'd say France still holds the edge.

Around 14m would translate to roughly $147m with your ATP

While around 10m in Germany would translate to roughly $142m.

Both are going to be far closer to A1 Dollargross than anticipated though - most predictions in the Summer were probably around $70m-$80m.
