Updated Franchise Rights Thread

Hello and welcome to the updated franchise rights thread! I figured now is a good time to update a new thread that has a revised list of what rights each player owns. This is a living post that I'll be updating as often as I can! As a reminder, for players who want to claim franchise rights to existing material, here are the rules...

1. No claiming franchise rights for any property that's had a theatrical movie in the past five years.

 

2. Claiming franchise rights for a property with a future film scheduled is only allowed if you announce your intent in the Part 1 / Advance Schedule thread at least one year to the date before the real one comes out.

3. Some franchises are already owned by players from the old CAYOM. They have exclusive rights to make the films and decide on their own what to do with them. Make sure a franchise you want to adapt is not already owned by someone else, so be kind to ask first. Also, you can ask the owner of a franchise if he/she could sell it to you. If a franchise is owned by a player unlikely to return, you can ask others for permission to take over the rights. For Year 1, previously held franchise rights are reserved to those who had them in CAYOM 2.0, but if not claimed by the end of the first year they become available.

 

4. You own exclusive franchise rights to films you make up on your own.

5. Some franchises shouldn't be used altogether. Major classic franchises like Indiana Jones or Jurassic Park should be off-limits completely, and some franchises that suffered from overexposure in the old CAYOM should also be off-limits unless permission is granted.

6. You cannot reserve the rights to classic material in the public domain, like the Bible. You can still make films based off said material and the rights are reserved automatically to your particular interpretation, but others are equally free to make their own. Public domain material created by the internet still needs rights reserving.

 

7. If you're given the rights of an IP that another player made a film of in the past, you must have five game years since the previous film of that franchise before using the IP. For example, if the IP was used in Y3, you'd have to wait for Y8.

 

8. *THIS IS A NEW RULE*—Players can claim franchise rights from an inactive player if they haven't used those rights in any films for five or more game years.
