Who cares about Gaga or Katy Perry music sales in this thread!

Move on!

Wrong; Harlequin is sold on Spotify, Apple Music and all the other streamers, which is the way that most music reaches listeners these days. Your argument there has not weight, as vinyl sales aren't the only drivers for most music anymore. Harlequin was originally marketed as the newest Gaga project to all fans when it was released last weekend, and it topped Apple's pop album chart for 1 day (before falling). When Beyonce released a country album (different genre than her norm!) earlier this year, it still topped the Billboard 200 weekly chart too. So it just doesn't fly to say that because the music falls into a different category, it can't be judged by normal sales standards.

Gaga also had a Billboard 200 #1 hit with her Tony Bennett jazzy standards album Cheek to Cheek, back in 2014.  But then her 2021 Love for Sale album of standards nosedived with only 38,000 initial sales. The 331k-selling Chromatica you cite was released 4+ years ago (2020). That's a long time between musical projects. Guess what, Katy Perry's Smile album also came out in 2020, and it sold 402,000 albums in the US. Now, in 2024, both sets of their respective sales are objectively much lower. Can it not be true that there is evidence of parallel downward trajectories for both artists here?

Each release has to stand or fail on its own. Either it is popular or it isn't. In this case, Harlequin is tied to Joker 2 (analogous to Prince's HUGE album inspired by Batman in the day; that one was fire, maybe because he kept the Prince-like pop in it). In this case, though, so Harlequin is not driving tons of positive attention to the film. Simple as that.

Not to feed into this popgirl

war but theres a whole lot of nonsense written here. I’m sorry Jerri but you have no idea what you are talking about. There are studio albums and side projects. Beyonces Country album is her main studio album while the gift was a side project. Gagas side projects are her jazz standards albums that include love for sale. Harlequin is a mostly jazz standard companion album that had no vinyls and CDs ready for week 1. If you know anything about week 1 sales, that’s where pop girls get most of their sales, Katy got 90% of her sales from physical copies. Your figures of sales of Chromatica and Smile are totally wrong as chromatica opened with 270 k and smile opened with 50k. Chromatica had 2 top 5s and a number 1 hit. Just FYI but Harlequin is now out streaming 143

I swear Katy fans are completely delusional.

Anyway back to joker 2 flopping

Joker II

Thursday Comps:

Theater 2: 92 Tickets

BB: $12.15M

Alien: Romulus: $14.88M

Dune 2: $13.98M

Aquaman 2: $15.13M

The Marvels: $4.99M

John Wick 4: $8.18M

Ticket sales were just fine, but comps are still adjusting up. Somehow $13M is still alive here!

Friday Comps:

Theater 1: 108 Tickets
Theater 2: 136 Tickets

BB: $31.53M
Alien: Romulus: $67.30M
Dune 2: $20.81M
Aquaman 2: $37.97M
The Marvels: $15.19M
John Wick 4: $23.51M

Still varied, but I'd average to $22M

Joker II

Final Thursday Comps:

Theater 1: 131 Tickets

Theater 2: 149 Tickets

BB: $15.40M

Alien: Romulus: $15.17M

Dune 2: $17.72M

Aquaman 2: $19.09M

The Marvels: $6.20M

John Wick 4: $10.83M

Every comp pretty much went up. BUT I'll start biting that this pulls a Marvels over here.

Friday Comps:

Theater 1: 175 Tickets

Theater 2: 188 Tickets

BB: $30.06M

Alien: Romulus: $46.21M

Dune 2: $19.31M

Aquaman 2: $30.58M

The Marvels: $14.76M

John Wick 4: $23.36M

Still so wide. Feel like max is John Wick, but funny be surprised closer to Marvels

Probably a dumb thing to say here, but I kinda hope people dedicate more time to seeing The Wild Robot and Transformers One this weekend given how terrible Joker 2 is turning out. Any other movie like Beetlejuice or The Substance works to!

Hoping The Substance gets more screens from next week.

Moderation; NOT the Joker 2 nor the music thread. Take those conversations to the Joker 2 thread or the weekend thread. This is not the thread to discuss Gaga and Katy Perry or share your weekend predictions.
