Very close. They have the same average ticket price?

No , Frozen opened on March and Male  on July..

Japan enforced a new tax policy which stipulated that the consumption tax rate rise 3%..

So, the movie ticket price has increased 100 Yen since 2014 April...

Yeah, people here were really worried the price hike would hurt Frozen's run in Japan. It really didn't effect it at all. Japanese people will go see a movie if they think it is worth the higher cost. :D

Though I'm an American who has never been to Japan, it seems that the Japanese are willing to spend more on "stuff." This is why laserdisc took off much more in Japan than the U.S., for example. The Lost Decade and the Graying don't seem to have hurt this (much).

-Toho Cinemas Biggest Opening Weekends since 2013

Saturday admissions were above Frozen and Monsters University, but unlike those films, Maleficent saw a decrease on Sunday and ended up just below them for the weekend.

With 120,498 admissions at Toho Cinemas, it should have between 550,000-600,000 admissions for the weekend.  It's hard to say what the avg. ticket price is, but it shouldn't be too high since the 3D share is really, really low.

I think it missed ¥800 million ($8 million), and will come in around ¥760/770 million ($7.4/7.5 million) in the morning.  Disney is reporting a $7.1 million opening weekend, but that honestly looks a little too low.  And they tend to underestimate most weeks.  Regardless though, this is the best opening for a live-action film since 2012, and a total of ¥5 billion ($50 million) is still looking good.

I'm working on the Weekend Estimates now, and will go into detail for Edge of Tomorrow then.

Wow I haven't visited this forum for a looong time. Told you Maleficent would be big. I'm thinking at least $50m total. Very interested in Godzilla's OW in a couple of weeks. I hope it's a success, for the sake of Hollywood movies in Japan.

Not exactly. People don't pay for a movie because they liked of another.Like it or not, a movie only have good word of mouth if people liked it.Maleficent is even bigger than Frozen in Latin America, and Frozen was a big hit in France, Germany, Australia and South Korea, the four markets where Maleficent numbers are good but not great.People liked Alice -it would be a hit anyway - but I agree that it only got 1billion because of 3D fever.Clash of the Titans is a stupid explosions movie. This kind of movies allways have public (Michael Bay says hello). But I agree that it was bigger because of 3D fever too.

That's true, but you forget that in Japan, Frozen is not just any movie. It's making $240m+. It's a rare phenomenon. You can't compare that to its performance in other countries. Also, it's not because they love Frozen, but because the Disney/princess hype from Frozen made people there interested in Maleficent. The trailers and promos were attached with Frozen. And when it's attached to something as big as Frozen, it's hard for people not to notice it. So yeah, I think Frozen's huge success really helped Maleficent, especially with its OW.
