JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

Out of question from what I know: no upcoming holiday for it.

Doesn't need a holiday, just some great holds like this past weekend. I know it's unlikely, but it's not out of the question. Corpse said 6b could be in play, so maybe 6.5b too. Also I'm not sure about the schedule, are there any big movies coming this May/June?

Btw, FF7 soundtrack album and the song See You Again are dominating iTunes Japan. The album is climbing on Oricon chart (physical album chart) too, reaching #2 this past week. Very rare for a hip-hop song/album.

So Cindy could still make 50 miilion dollars?

If the strong hold that Cindy shows in weekend and in midweek continues, 50M$ (or 6 billion yen) are still in play.

For comparison, with the same Ow multiplier of Maleficent (9,45x) the total should be 5,25BY (44M$), with the same of Big Hero 6 (15,24x) should be 8,47BY (71M$) and with the same of Frozen (33,34x which is the highest ever here) should be 18,5BY (155M$), but unfortunately Cindy is freezed only for seven minutes.

I think at the end will be between Mal and BH6, 11x/12x for a total of 6/6,5BY (50/55M$). We'll see.

Midweek estimates: Cinderella continues to stay at #1, is down 18% vs last week Mon-Fri. Total as at today should be 4,25Byen (36M$). Maze Runner opens wide today but is behind Cindy at 5-chains with about 25K admissions. FF7 shows again a good hold (tot 3,15BYen - 27M$)

Saturday: as the title suggest it's a close race between Cindy and Initiation Love. The local opener hurt the Disney's (they should have potentially the same audience) which is down 31% at 5 chains, but it seems that it isn't sufficent to prevent the 5-in-a-row for Cindy. Sunday will tell us the truth. The Maze Runner is #5 with about 45k adm and Chappie is #6 with 35k.

Cinderella wins fifth weekend in a row. Actuals 247MYen (-16%) - Tot 4,54 BYen and 3,57M adm. It's still on pair with Maleficent in Yen but ahead on tickets sold. So, in the past 63 weeks, since Frozen opens, Disney's stay at #1 29 times vs 27 for local movies and 7 for others Hollywood's.

Japan and Hollywood Franchises:

The Harry Potter Saga loses 2 moviegoers on 3 through the years, only the final chapter rises a bit and did better than some predecessors:

05 :: 16.20 million - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)
08 :: 14.00 million - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)
14 :: 11.00 million - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
19 :: 9.00 million - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)
29 :: 7.80 million - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007)
48 :: 6.90 million - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (2011)

54 :: 6.50 million - Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)
75 :: 5.58 million - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 (2010)

Instead for Pirates of the Caribbean saga, the latest movie is the only one that did worse than the last:

24 :: 8.40 million - Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)
30 :: 7.75 million - Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006)
68 :: 5.86 million - Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011)
87 :: 5.10 million - Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

Viewers also fallen for Star Wars:

26 :: 8.30 million - Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999)
49 :: 6.80 million - Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002)
52 :: 6.60 million - Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005)

Final Chapter is the bigger for the Lord of the Ring and Toy Story, while Matrix and Terminator has their peak with the 2nd movie.

Seeing these miscellaneous results, it's interesting that will happen in next 2-3 years, when three highly anticipated animated sequels coming:  Finding Dory (Finding Nemo was the most attended western animated before Frozen), Toy Story 4 (maybe more a reboot than a sequel) and the rumored, confirmed, but still without an official title and a release date Frozen 2. Which of these three will be able to do better?
