Avatar 2's Performance prove that Audiences here would reject anything that's not in line with their taste. &You all still in the same height for Mario? LMAO current Projection per Industry Forecast is already optimal. &If it performs higher than that might be probable but not like it's happening :)

China & Korea perform more like Japan in recent days.

I mean, I certainly think the film has some good cards in its hands, and if japanese audiences latches onto it, I could see my 7-8b become a 10b, or higher, but that's always a big if with japan, and I would certainly think those numbers would be overperforming expectations - I am still feeling rather confident atleast that this will beat out minions, but we'll see what happens

but there is always a limit of plausibility, and thinking this film can do DS numbers is absolutely entering the realm of delusion

Hi Isaac,

Would that be possible for you to post the top 30 ? Many foreign independent movies released in Japan never make the top 10 or  even the top 20. Having access to their Japan BO would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much

I am doing my best to get r/boxoffice off their delusional expectations lol.

Everyone is on their high-horse against anyone showing any bit of realism in their predictions of the movie in Japan/SK with how it's performing domestically and in other markets, which I can't entirely blame them, it's fun to react.

I agree Avatar 2 is probably the best example of how Japan can reject a film that has become a massive box office phenomenon worldwide. Even more so when its predecessor grossed over ¥‎15 billion. Other notable examples would be the big CBMs (Endgame, IW, NWH) and TLK 2019. Mario does have more going for it than these particular examples that could help make it break out big, but I prefer to be cautiously optimistic right now with a target above DM3 for highest Illumination film.

It's been a decade and people in that subreddit are still shocked at Frozen making that money in Japan when if you really think about it, Frozen had all the elements to appeal to Japan. It's basically a 3D animated whimsical fairy tale shoujo movie (complete with magical powers and a dress transformation) with a hugely popular self-empowerment power ballad with high-pitched and throaty female vocals that is the type to become ubiquitous in karaokes everywhere. It also had a novelty factor since it reimagined the Snow Queen fairy tale. Notice how when Frozen 2 leaned into a more serious MCU/Avatar The Last Airbender vibe with a heroic ballad (Into the Unknown) instead, it really dropped from the first (even though it topped the first everywhere else) plus it lost that novelty factor.

Another reason Frozen 2 dropped a lot in Japan was because the songs weren't nearly as catchy, thus limiting the number of repeat viewings. And while the first Frozen had all the elements to break out, nobody expected anywhere near the  ¥25.5 billion it grossed considering no WDAS animation had passed even ¥5 billion at that point. Plenty of shoujo "magical girl" movies like Sailor Moon don't gross even 1/10 of what Frozen grossed in Japan, so it was really the combination of everything you listed amplifying one another.

It's way easier to say what allowed it to break out in hindsight than it was to see it coming at the time. Absolutely no one expected Frozen to be as big as it was back then. Disney had never even had a 10b film so the idea that they'd suddenly have a 25b one (which could've gone all the way to even 28 or perhaps 29b if Disney had waited on the home video, getting within 10% of SA) was absolutely ludicrous.

Frozen's run was one of the best runs ever in the market, before DS possibly the craziest run ever there. SA was higher but miyazaki was a known name with a history of box office greatness so the idea that he'd claim the crown again was not that surprising.
