JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

MoS can't get to $20M...?Well, there goes that $700M dreamA dream within a dream, I guess

Even if it makes 20M in Japan, it still won't reach 700M WW. Needs about 40M-45M from Japan for that. And I was talking about possible finish with the OW number. There are no figures or estimates yet, but if MOS opened to 2.5M for 3-day, then 15M will be the likely total.

Weekend Ranking [8/31-9/1]

1 (1) The Wind Rises (Toho) ¥280 million ($2.9 million) Week 7
2 (-) Man of Steel (Warner Bros.) ¥250 million ($2.6 million) DEBUT
3 (-) Sadako 3D Part 2 (Kadokawa Pictures) ¥210 million ($2.2 milion) DEBUT
4 (3) Monsters University (Disney) ¥140 million ($1.5 million) Week 9
5 (2) Star Trek Into Darkness (Paramount) ¥135 million ($1.4 million) Week 2
6 (4) The After-Dinner Mysteries (Toho) ¥115 million ($1.2 million) Week 5
7 (-) Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day (Aniplex) ¥105 million ($1.1 million) DEBUT
8 (5) World War Z (Toho-Towa) ¥95 million ($1.0 million) Week 4
9 (6) Gatchaman (Toho) ¥90 million ($910,000) Week 2
10 (7) White House Down (Sony) ¥80 million ($810,000) Week 3

Sunday is the 1st of the Month, meaning tickets will be 40% off at all major cinema chains. This greatly boosts admissions for the day and weekend, which can really benefit most films. Last year, the 1st of Sept. also fell on this weekend, and most films dropped 25% or less (a couple films had single digit drops or small increases, too). I'm not going to predict any single digit drops or increases, though, so if it does happen it'll be a nice "surprise"!

The Wind Rises is depending it's #1 spot against the debuts of Man of Steel and Sadako 3D Part 2. I'm predicting it comes out on top since it should have the best drop in the Top 10 (Wolf Children actually saw an increase this weekend last year, which was also in it's 7th weekend), and because if it does manage to remain in first place for a 7th-consecutive weekend, it'll be the first to do it since Alice in Wonderland and the 13th film ever since 1998 to achieve this goal.

I might be taking a risk on Anohana since it's only playing on 64 screens, but a number of those are large auditoriums and it's reaching 50% capacity or better for many of it's showtimes hours beforehand. I'm almost tempted to place it a couple positions higher. A Certain Magical Index did ¥100 million on just 30 screens earlier this year, and the Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha films also did over ¥120 million last year on 43/50 screens.

That's great for The Wind Rises. In week 7, facing 4 new releases and still win Sat admissions comfortably. But with 3D prices, could it be possible that MOS win in gross despite lower admissions?
