JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

This ticket price increase is really interesting. And Frozen is in the middle of it. Do you think it will have a big impact on Japanese box office? Especially to the movies that are playing right now and the movies that are gonna be released soon?

That was the first weekend (Friday included). On the second one it did $8,530,751 (Saturday and Sunday only)

That's right. We were talking about two different things.I had not seen that boxoffice.com updated 2th weekend gross actual data.

Also the 10-day total is changed. I correct.

150m is happening ?

Still a wee bit early to contemplate 150 I think. 100 is a reasonable goal, even highly likely now I'd say, but we need at least 2 more weeks to see how it might hold up long term.

Frozen is definitely running much hotter than MU, it looks to be around 53-54m at the end of its 3rd weekend. For Some reason BOM skips the 3rd week going from end of 2nd weekend to end of 4th weekend, but MU was only at 47m after its 4th weekend. That's a huge gap already.

Toy Story 3 is a better match with 44.3m after its 3rd weekend and did another 18m over the next 7 days. If Frozen adds to its lead again next week I think we can start contemplating numbers higher than 100m.

Hmm, looking at MU and TS3 it looks like both movies ened up around double their total after their 4th weekend. That might give a rough idea for Frozen after next weekend.

MU - $46,982,545 after 4th weekend, $90,141,508 total

TS3- $62,557,777 after 4th weekend, $126,660,533 total

its possible. Prices are going up next week. Got to wonder if the ever increasing days are do to WOM or beating the price hike. Wont know until next Thursdays number. I only know the official grosses for cumulated mon/fri and cumulated sat/sun. So daily grosses is based on 5-days and 2-days average. I'll post the new version updated with actuals for 2nd week. In post #3091 there are my predictions for 3rd week based on statistics.I think that tomorrow Disney say something because surely 'Toy Story 3' will be under

from an economics point of view when ever there is a sharp increase in prices you often get a similar decrease in demand initially. They doubled the cigarette tax in NY but the tax revenue stayed flat as people searched for alternatives. Politicians never learn. But this frozen. Some may rush to see it just before hike causing a perceived drop for a couple of days, but in the end WOM causes people to want to take part in a cultural phenomenon. What's an extra dollar for that?overall japanese admissions could see a decline though. A ten percent hike could turn off a few % of the population. 10% is sharp when its been flat for 20years.

Starting Tuesday, April 1st, Japan's Domestic Consumption Tax Law goes into effect, increasing taxes from 5% to 8%. And sometime in October of 2015, it will increase again from 8% to 10%.This is causing all movies tickets, including discount day ticket prices such as Ladies Day or the 1st of the Month, as well as Student/Senior ticket prices, to increase by ¥100 yen (~$1) or approx. 8% using the avg. ticket price since the early 1990's.Ticket prices vary a bit from theater to theater, but most ticket prices will be increasing from:General Ticket Prices:¥1,800 -> ¥1,900 (+5.6%) - Adult Admission¥1,500 -> ¥1,600 (+6.7%) - College Student Admission¥1,000 -> ¥1,100 (+10%) - High School Student / Middle-Elementary Student Admission¥300 -> ¥400 (+33.3%) - 3D PremiumCommon Discount Prices:¥1,000 -> ¥1,100 (+10%) - Senior Admission (60 or older)¥1,000 -> ¥1,100 (+10%) - Ladies Day (Every Wednesday)¥1,000 -> ¥1,100 (+10%) - First Day (First of Every Month)Movie tickets have remained the same price in Japan since the early 1990's (around 1992), ever since the country began it's recession, so as expected the increase does have some mixed reactions from moviegoers before it even goes into effect.Aeon Cinemas, which became the largest cinema chain in the country last year by acquiring Warner Mycal, is actually "combating" the price hike by allowing anyone 55 or older (vs 60 or older) to get the senior discount at their locations. They're also talking about beginning a new discount day at their locations called, "Happy Monday", where anyone can purchase a ticket for ¥1,100.It'll be interesting to see how the tax hike will effect the box-office, if at all, next month. I imagine discount days, while they're increasing as well, will become even more popular than they already are for most moviegoers. And with 3D mostly on the way out (shares have dropped from 70/80% to 20/30% in just 2 years), I'd say this will be the final nail in the coffin for that format unless it's something really, really special.

Is a ¥100 yen (~$1) increase in ticket prices really that big of a deal? Sure, I'll be pissed if tickets for me increased $1, but I would still go to the movies that I really want to see in movie theaters. The increase would just mean I would be more likely to avoid the movies that I'm unsure about.

That's probably the most important point. Frozen may not see much of a setback, but overall admissions could take a serious hit.
