30. NISA

First was Frozen unsurprisingly with the Blu-ray/DVD becoming the biggest seller in history in the format, and with sales of the OST nearing an all-time best (last I checked, it was only trailing The Bodyguard OST). Not to mention how many toy related items were sold.

Second was the Yo-Kai Watch franchise with sales from the past year hitting over 4 million video games; manga sales exceeding 1.5 million; and Yo-Kai medals (game/anime related toys) selling out across the country for weeks/months on end.

The majority of the remaining Top 30 consists of everyday products like detergent, tea or food products, and electronics.

What are the top 5 Disney Animation Studios films in Japan (and their Japanese grosses)? I feel like between some of the Japanese elements/inspiration as well as riding on the coattails of Frozen, Big Hero 6 is practically guaranteed to become the #2 Disney Animation Studios film over there.

It only took Frozen 16/17 days to become Walt Disney's highest-grossing animated film of all-time, but Dinosaur held that record for nearly 14 years!

Frozen will end up more than doubling Dinosaur's total.

I'm surprised Wreck-it Ralph didn't do better than it did. Sure, the movie focused largely on American and American-inspired gaming characters, but I would have thought they'd milk AKB48's recording of "Sugar Rush" as well as their music video of it for all they were worth. Heck, wasn't the Japanese title of the film even changed to "Sugar Rush" over there?

Anyway, yeah. Big Hero 6 *should* easily end up the #2 Disney Animation Studios film over there after its initial run. So much going for it, I'll be surprised if it falls amongst the crowd and fails to surpass Dinosaur.

WDAS wasn't doing so well when WiR first came out though, being a distant third place behind Studi Ghibli and Pixar. It's also debatable if the AKB48 element is enough to make a film a hit in Japan by itself.

Weekend Ranking (11/08-09)

01 (03) Beauty and the Beast (Gaga) Week 2
02 (--) Twilight Sasara Saya (Warner Bros.) DEBUT
03 (02) Clover (Toho) Week 2
04 (01) The Expendables 3 (Shochiku) Week 2
05 (04) Dracula ZERO (Toho-Towa) Week 2
06 (05) Close Range Love (Toho) Week 5
07 (07) Cape Nostalgia (Toei) Week 5
08 (12) HappinessCharge Precure! The Ballerina of the Land of Dolls (Toei) Week 5
09 (11) Stand By Me, Doraemon (Toho) Week 14
10 (10) Grace of Monaco (Gaga) Week 4

Quite the interesting weekend here.

>Beauty and the Beast rises to 1st place for a big victory here. It exceeded expectations last weekend and debuted in 3rd, but manages to hold on quite well to capture the #1 spot in its second weekend earning ¥114,272,300 ($1.02 million) with 82,085 admissions. It should continue to have a very leggy run as it's not likely to lose hardly any screens for weeks given its low initial count and this weekend's #1 ranking.

>Twilight Sasara Saya debuts in 2nd place, though it did win the weekend in a very close admissions race (just 55 admissions!). Playing on 264 screens, the film grossed ¥108,366,000 ($970,000) with 82,140 admissions. A pretty mediocre start, but let's see how it holds through the month.

>Close Range Love holds fairly steady and grosses ¥46,003,200 ($410,000) with 37,705 admissions in its 5th weekend, bringing its total above the ¥1 billion milestone to ¥1,009,330,800 ($9.2 million) with 819,430 admissions.

>Stand By Me, Doraemon rises back into the Top 10! It spent 12-consecutive weeks in the Top 10 before falling to 11th last weekend, so this makes its 13th non-consecutive week in the Top 10 now. After 14-weeks in release, it has grossed a huge ¥8.21 billion ($78.9 million) with 6.18 million admissions.

>And HappinessCharge Precure! also rises back into the Top 10 as well. Pretty much all the films skewing to an older audiences were bumped off for it and Doraemon to increase.

>Sabotage opened very poorly and missed the Top 10. I'll post the numbers when they're available (it placed 13th), Algren, don't worry.

Weekend Ranking (11/15-16)

01 (--) As the Gods Will (Toho) DEBUT
02 (--) Paper Moon (Shochiku) DEBUT

03 (01) Beauty and the Beast (Gaga) Week 3
04 (03) Clover (Toho) Week 3
05 (02) Twilight Sarasa Saya (Warner Bros.) Week 2
06 (04) The Expendables 3 (Shochiku) Week 3
07 (05) Close Range Love (Toho) Week 6
08 (06) Dracula ZERO (Toho-Towa) Week 3
09 (--) Expelled from Paradise (Toei) DEBUT
10 (08) Stand By Me, Doraemon (Toho) Week 15

>As the Gods Will has the best opening in 7 weeks, but still got off to a mediocre start. From director Takashi Miike, the film earned ¥180,281,700 ($1.59 million) with 133,887 admissions on 318 screens. The opening should be enough for it reach ¥1 billion ($9/10 million), but it take most of the remaining year to do it.

>Paper Moon grossed ¥133,625,600 ($1.18 million) with 104,018 admissions on 260 screens. A pretty standard and expected opening here. The film is already showing strength over the weekdays, so legs could turn out well here that ¥1 billion ($9/10 million) could also be doable.

>Expelled from Paradise makes a big splash by making the Top 10. Playing on only 13 screens, it grossed ¥29,194,600 ($256,000) with 17,274 admissions. The opening is impressive all on its own, but what makes it more so is the film is original. It's not uncommon for anime films with strong fanbases to pull in big numbers on very few screens, but I don't remember the last time an original film did this well on so few screens.

The Shinjuku Wald 9 Cinema was noted to have made up most of the weekend's total for Expelled from Paradise, being fully booked on Saturday and most of Sunday.

Granted, its director and screenwriter are behind very popular series like Fullmetal Alchemist, Mobile Suit Gundam, and Magi Madoka Magicka, but Expelled from Paradise isn't related to any prior series.

The absence of any convo on this thread is very depressing :(

The box office looks pretty weak right now (though it's impossible to tell without any way of comparing). I'm doubting whether 2014 sells 170m tickets now (but have done for a while now). I wonder if it'll reach 160m even.

Also, Paper Moon? Is it the ultimate release delay and they've only now got the 1973 film?
