JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

Online petitions to release Dragon 2? You have GOT to be kidding me. I guess the HTTYD series is about as popular in Japan as the Vampire Academy movie in America.

How to Train Your Dragon is the best reviewed imported animated movie after Toy Story 3 in Japan on every major review site.

Fans sent the petition to Dean DeBlois himself recently, and had this to say (even signing the petition himself!) :D

>Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends looks like it earned itself the biggest opening day of the year!  Using these admissions, its opening day may have broke ¥500 million ($5 million)...

And it could very well end up above ¥800 million ($8 million+) or even ¥900 million ($9 million+) for the weekend, earning the biggest opening weekend of the year, too!  And its 3-day total will surely be above ¥1 billion ($10 million) now, and could be near ¥1.2/1.3 billion ($11/12 million).

>Guardians of the Galaxy is doing less than 25% of Rurouni Kenshin's numbers, but it's still doing alright.

If Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends follows the same pattern as the first film earlier this year, here is where it could, theoretically, open:

Biggest Opening Weekends This Decade (2010-)

Weekend Gross ¥($) / Admissions - Film (Dis.) Year
01. ¥1.372 billion ($16.7 million) / 1,140,081 - One Piece Film Z (Toei) 2012
02. ¥1.316 billion ($14.3 million) / 828,149 - Alice in Wonderland (Disney) 2010
03. ¥1.301 billion ($16.4 million) / 880,697 - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2 (Warner Bros.) 2011
04. ¥1.209 billion ($14.8 million) / 773,184 - Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (Disney) 2011
05. ¥1.133 billion ($14.1 million) / 771,764 - Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo (T-Joy) 2012
06. ¥1.038 billion ($11.9 million) / 819,738 - One Piece Film Strong World (Toei) 2010
¥1.035 billion ($10.1 million) / 757,000 - Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends (Warner Bros.) 2014
07. ¥977.3 million ($11.1 million) / 649,190 - Toy Story 3 (Disney) 2010
08. ¥971.9 million ($11.1 million) / 707,399 - Bayside Shakedown: Set the Guys Loose! (Toho) 2010
09. ¥960.9 million ($9.8 million) / 747,451 - The Wind Rises (Toho) 2013
10. ¥956.9 million ($11.3 million) / 612,211 - Umizaru: The Last Message (Toho) 2010
11. ¥937.4 million ($11.2 million) / 766,633 - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 1 (Warner Bros.) 2010
12. ¥895.6 million ($10.4 million) / 680,190 - Arrietty (Toho) 2010
13. ¥878.2 million ($11.1 million) / 686,981 - Umizaru: Brave Hearts (Toho) 2012
14. ¥847.4 million ($8.5 million) / 614,969 - Monsters University (Disney) 2013
15. ¥804.3 million ($10.3 million) / 604,089 - Bayside Shakedown: The Final (Toho) 2012
16. ¥789.3 million ($7.8 million) / 649,865 - Detective Conan: The Sniper from Another Dimension (Toho) 2014
17. ¥767.2 million ($7.6 million) / 554,991 - Stand By Me, Doraemon (Toho) 2014
18. ¥763.4 million ($7.5 million) / 602,347 - Frozen (Disney) 2014
19. ¥698.5 million ($8.2 million) / 427,973 - Resident Evil: Afterlife (Sony) 2010
20. ¥691.7 million ($6.8 million) / 500,837 - Maleficent (Disney) 2014

I think it'll open closer to ¥900 million than over ¥1 billion, but its Saturday already put it over half way there.

I wonder how well Big Hero 6 will do in Japan. Disney is only waiting 6 weeks to release in Japan after domestic release.

At least Interstellar won't be a competition in Japan as it is releasing a month before Big Hero 6.

Its stupid to release any big budget ($150+ million) movie in the USA/Canada market on the same week. Interstellar will do better than Big Hero 6. Why would Disney give up being #1 movie on a weekend ?

Toho, Movix, 109, Kinezo Cinema Chains Weekend Admissions (09/13-14)
293,905 - Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends (NEW)
73,328 - Guardians of the Galaxy (NEW)
68,701 (-25%) - Stand By Me, Doraemon (Week 6)
54,470 (-28%) - Lupin III (Week 3)
38,171 - Lady Maiko (NEW)
32,162 - Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (PREVIEWS)
23,555 (-35%) - Lucy (Week 3)
22,301 (-32%) - Hot Road (Week 5)
22,958 (-39%) - Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc (Week 7)
19,298 (-47%) - Non-Stop (Week 2)
8,356 (-42%) - In the Hero (Week 2)

>Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends has the highest admissions total at Toho Cinemas at all the other chains since The Wind Rises, and it probably beat The Wind Rises, too, since Warner Bros. films play stronger at Aeon Cinemas.

The chances that it opened above ¥1 billion ($10 million+) and 800,000 admissions are very high, which will make it the first film to do so since 2012's One Piece Film Z, and the first live-action film to do it since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2 in 2011.

>Guardians of the Galaxy probably missed reaching ¥250 million ($2.3/2.4 million), but it looks to have comfortably exceeded the ¥200 million mark with maybe ¥220/230 million ($2.1/2.2 million).  This isn't a great start, but hey, it's not that bad and probably a lot higher than before they began marketing Rocket Raccoon all over the place.

Weekend Estimates will be up shortly.
