Weekend Estimates

Sept. 1-2

1 (1) Rurouni Kenshin (Warner Bros.) ¥435 million ($5.6 million), +9%, Week 2

2 (2) The Avengers (Disney) ¥305 million ($3.9 million), -3%, Week 3

3 (3) Prometheus (FOX) ¥250 million ($3.2 million), -17%, Week 2

4 (4) Dear (To You) (Toho) ¥205 million ($2.6 million), -13%, Week 2

5 (-) Akko-chan: The Movie (Shochiku) ¥170 million ($2.2 million), 0, NEW

6 (6) The Wolf Children Ame and Yuki (Toho) ¥160 million ($2 million), +18%, Week 7

7 (5) Umizaru: Brave Hearts (Toho) ¥140 million ($1.8 million), +2%, Week 8

8 (7) Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (Paramount) ¥80 million ($1 million), -11%, Week 5

9 (8) Ushijima the Loan Shark (SPD) ¥60 million ($750,000), -19%, Week 2

10 (9) Pokemon: Kyurem Vs. The Sacred Swordsman (Toho) ¥55 million ($700,000), -23%, Week 8

These figures are very rough.

Saturday was the first of the month, meaning tickets were 40% off at major cinema chains. 'Wolf Children' saw the biggest increase at 36% in admissions over last weekend, 'Kenshin' rose 23%, 'Umizaru 4' was up 18%, and 'Avenger's' at 10%. Everything else dropped in admissions, but only 'Dear', 'Ushijima', and 'Pokemon' dropped more than 10%.

(Note: These are NOT increases/decreases in Gross).

What I did was take last week's average ticket price for each film and reduce it by 10-15% to get a number close to the weekend average of past similar weekends. It's worked well in the few cases that the first of the month has fallen on a weekend, but it isn't flawless so don't take them to be 100% accurate.

No data is available for 'The Intouchables', but that's only because it's playing in 46 theaters. There's a chance it still made the Top 10.

ah that seems low, so it must have been considered a disappointment there when it came out

I wouldn't have expected a very big number from Japan since they have had plenty of local Godzilla films. The same way the English Girl With the Dragon Tattoo made average numbers in Sweden, and nowhere near the massive gross of the Swedish version.

Not really, it was the 7-year long wait more than anything. And the second film was just massive some sort of drop-off was inevitable. It spent 10 weeks at No.1, and is still the highest grossing local live-action film by a huge margin. To put it into comparison, it sold 25% more tickets than Avatar and grossed 15% more. The massive 21.3% rating (double Umizaru 3's TV rating before Umizaru 4 opened) for the TV Special last night ensures the final film won't see anywhere near the drop-off the third film did and may increase.

It's been doing very well, but do remember that the weekend was inflated due to the first of the month. Drops next weekend will probably be on the hefty side and Summer Vacation is now officially over. All holdovers will begin to see some heavier drops now.

Another big week for 'Umizaru 4' and 'Wolf Children'. ¥7.8 billion ($100 million) might still be a stretch, but 'Umizaru 4' can certainly still achieve it. And 'Wolf Children' will soon become the only non-Studio Ghibli, non-TV franchise, animated film to ever gross more than ¥4 billion ($50 million).

'The Avengers' is still doing well and will crack the Top 10 next weekend.

'Madagascar 3' is about to become the first Dreamworks film to reach ¥2 billion since 'Kung Fu Panda', making it just the fourth film in the studio's history to achieve the milestone.

'Ruruouni Kenshin' more than tripled it's opening weekend in just a week and will likely hit ¥3 billion ($40 million).

I'm already satisfied with TA's run. It's done better than anyones imagination. It accomplished the 1.5B WW goal and soon it'll pass TASM. It should finish around 50M, what an impressive accomplishment. It's total will be higher than combined total of IM, IM2, TIH, CA and Thor. Hopefully, TA will help Marvel brand name in Japan and IM3/Thor 2 can have good totals. :) Edited by druv10
