There's a lot of individual moments that I really love in this movie, and as a whole I was a lot more entertained by it than Fantastic Mr. Fox. While Anderson's stylings are just as evident as ever, they never cross the line into self-importance making the film as accessible as anything Anderson's done before.

But thinking about it for awhile after seeing it, there really isn't all that much to the story. It's basically the same plot done twice, the second time being in a conveniently timed rainstorm and after the other scouts do a bizarre heel-face-turn and decide to help.

That also makes one shockingly dark and violent scene involving those characters in the first act stand out a lot more than it would have otherwise, and it really jars with the silly, almost cartoonish tone of the rest of the film. Let's just say I can understand why baumer hated this movie so much when taking that scene into account. What makes it worse is that it was ultimately pretty unnecessary. You could easily have cut out that bit entirely and not affected the story at all.

But since I did ultimately have fun with this film, I'll give it a B+. I'd probably watch it again if I get the chance but I think I'd fast forward over that one scene.

Wes Anderson is one of those love or hate directors, but I'm rare in that I've always had mixed feelings about his films. Moonrise Kingdom was no different for me.

There's no denying that it's well-made, and Anderson is creative and original enough that he has a style really all to himself. My problem is that I tend to appreciate relatable characters and situations, and Anderson's films come across as too off-the-wall and quirky for me to really understand where the characters are coming from. That being said, I did enjoy this, and really dug Norton's performance.

Decent flick.

I liked Darjeling Limited (strange that I liked it) and I thought Tennenbaums was very over rated. Life Aquatic was ok....that's all I've seen.

I know this was forever ago but you havean't seen the 2 best imo. Rushmore I believe anyone could like this if they just give it a chance, I really think its Wes Anderson's best film, Jason Shwartzman was perfect for the part as an Odd teenage who has a crush on a teacher at his private school. SOO GOOOD!! and Bottle Rocket got Luke and Owen Wilson Famous. But as said before if you don't like his style and don't appreicate what he brings forth then you might not like Bottle Rocket or Rushmore either.Moonrise is excellent, my favourite film thus far this year. the acting, wes's direction, the way it's told... Timeless, I love it!! really makes you think it's a classic film don't it? but still very modern.

Delightful. Best movie of the year by far. But then, I have only seen Fantastic Mr Fox, so I'm not used to or tired of such a movie. It was quirky, the characters grew on me immensely as it went on and I love the score and imagery. Breath of fresh air. Also, I am a relative noob in terms of indie cinema, but this gets everything right, in my opinion. None of the generic qualities that indie films, especially romance films, are plagued with- of course I say this from only minor experience and trailers. None of those awkward, silent, unnecessarily quirky bullshit. Basically, this world established its rules and had gleeful fun with it. After a little thought, a basic template of what I don't like to watch: Little Miss Sunshine.

If you loved this and Fantastic Mr Fox I recommend you check out Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums. They're both at the same quality level as Moonrise Kingdom.

B+

Pros:

Good writing

Amazing prod. design

Some nice acting

Great cinematography

Cons:

Some unnecessary filler, such as the affair halfway through.

Some scenes were almost like watching child porn

Somewhat forgettable

Finally got around to seeing this. I used to be a big Wes Anderson fan but drifted away as his films became more and more self-indulgent, and, well, twee. (Lasted through half of LIFE AQUATIC and never bothered to finish it, never got around to seeing DARJEELING LIMITED or MR FOX).

But -- I felt this was a return to his early form. Yes, like all Anderson movies, it runs right up to the edge of hipster-ish mock-ironic, winking-ness, but this time, it has a heart, a warm core, and some really delightful performances from the lead kids. I thought the increasing absurdity worked against it (the "turn" by the scout kids seemed completely random and un-motivated, the struck-by-lightning moment, etc), and my favorite moments were the quieter ones, mostly in the first half, as Sam and Suzy explored together. But Anderson absolutely nails the ending it and really makes up for the other shortcomings.

B+, I think, at least for now.

I personally love this film, the adult actors are just as great as the kids and then when it gets toward the end we see the bridge to the troop leaders office collapse and just see Edward Norton's character get him and tell the kids to follow him to the church I love that part because it gives me a feeling of this awesomely impeding doom feeling

I will give Moonrise Kingdom a straight up 5/5, because it is such beautiful movie. I mean by god, how was this robbed for a best cinematography nomination?! Its a feast for your eyes and your ears too, because, as always with Anderson, the soundtrack rules. The kid actors are both natural and very likable, and most of the adult actors are good too (especially Bruce Willis as the sadsack police officer). MK never goes overboard with quirkiness or the odd characters, and its well written even though it gets kinda muddled when the storm comes into the picture. This is actually a film I'd recommend to kids, but to smart kids. One of the best films of 2012, absolutely5/5
