doublejack
Somewhat serious question...extrapolating that (to a degree) for let's say TDKR opening weekend, why is $200m impossible for a 2D movie again?Because these are hand picked venues in specific locations to maximize the gross. Two of the four venues it is playing at are in New York. The prime time price at one venue is $13 for an adult, and at the other it is $13.50.No 2D film is going to come close to that average ticket price in wide release. Just isn't happening. The reality is that any 2D only film will need to sell about 20% more tickets than The Avengers did in order to reach $200M for a weekend. We can pretty much assume it won't happen.

Jordanstine
http://boxofficemojo.com/alltime/weekends/?adjust_yr=1&p=.htmIf I'm reading this correctly, The Avengers sold over 26 million tickets on opening weekend despite opening in less theaters than both TDK and HP: DH2. doublejack
THG late legs are freaking amazing. No doubt about it. However, I wonder how much of this is due to the fact that outside of TA, pretty much everything released in May has underperformed. THG hasn't exactly been pushed off a ton of screens. It did lose quite a few when TA opened, but then held relatively steady until just this weekend (where the holiday surely helped offset the screen loss). ecstasy
So with its hot late legs and an opening in China can THG hit 700m worldwide? That would be good milestone in addition to the 400m coming up soon.
