Want to ask about those VOD charts you posted back there

1) Do they come out immediately after the run ends in theatres?

2) Do they come out before the DVD/Blu-Ray/digital download?

3) Is it a one time thing over streaming? Or TV?

4) How much does it cost?

Thanks, at least we have one market with transparency.

Also, I recall you saying there were four big Korean titles coming out, I assume there's only one left?

Did you predict that this would be the biggest of four?

*Red= Still in theatres

Now I feel so good for all the Hollywood movies that got released and finished their run before Roaring Currents started attacking the B.O. with such unprecedented rampage.

GOTG is doomed though. Is 20m still possible?

1) Well, it depends on the movie. If a movie was successful, the studio is more likely to wait to build up more anticipation. For films that were flops, a lot of the studios cut the theatrical run early and move straight to the VOD market to maximize profits. There are always exceptions in both cases though. Frozen was hugely successful but disney decided to release early while the interest was still high. This followed a similar pattern to the DVD releases in US and Japan.

2) The DVD/Blu-ray market in Korea is pretty much dead, with most preferring to download films online (a lot of the time illegally). The increasing VOD market is helping to counteract this but it won't revive the DVD/blu ray sales. I think most of the times they time it to match release of VOD.

3) It's called IPTV over here. You subscribe to a particular provider (olleh and U+ is popular) and as long as you are a member you can watch the film you downloaded as many times as you like. Once your subscription ends, so does your right to watch the films you downloaded.

4) It depends on the popularity and demand of the film. Low demand films cost around $3.5 while highly popular films can cost up to $9 dollars (the price of a single movie ticket)

And yeah, one local film remaining; sea fog set to be released on august 13th. I don't see any film beating roaring currents this summer

hope that was helpful :)

Yes but at least Apes2 already did great number before getting it's leg cut short.

Agree about EOT, if only it could over-perform like this in Japan...

No chance. GOTG is now at $6.5m and might be around $8-8.5mm after this weekend.  It should end closer to $10m than $20m

That would be low. I guess Disney didn't expect any local movies to 'destroy' it's run like this.

What about the poor Hercules? Can it even make a million?

It's 947k that it needs to beat both Sat AND Sun in order to hold all top 5 spots for the top 5 single days admissions right?

(I believe right now it holds 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th or 6th?

Currently, roaring currents holds 5 positions in the top 10. Judging from the presales (which could exceed last week's presale # by friday) it should add a couple more spots over the weekend. Here is the biggest single day admissions.

Biggest single day admissions

01. 1,253,621 <Roaring Currents>

02. 1,228,955 <Roaring Currents>

03.    989,834 <Roaring Currents>

04.    956,500 <Transformers: Dark of the moon>

05.    942,277 <Transformers: Dark of the moon>

06.    919,010 <Secretly, Greatly>

07.    894,377 <Iron Man 3>

08.    870,279 <Kundo: Age of the Rampant>

09.    869,108 <Roaring Currents>

Is Roaring Currents a good film? Can anyone speak of its quality?

It resonates among Koreans because of what Yi sun-sin means to us. The acting is decent enough and the naval battle scenes are great but character development is pretty poor. A lot of koreans who watch the film ended up praising Yi Sun-sin rather than the film itself. All things considered I don't think foreigners will enjoy the film as much as Koreans.Chasmmi should be able to give you a much more objective opinion than me. Edited by Rsyu

The admissions itself speak of its quality. :D

Sometimes but not always. Masquerade for instance I felt was a great film and the admissions figures backed it up. There are always films like the thieves, Haeundae and D-war though which prove that admissions doesn't always go hand in hand with quality. I'm sure all markets have their fair share of such examples.
