South Korea Box Office

Recommended Posts

Interesting, no Bond films.

No Bond film has achieved more than 2.5 million admissions. That said, Skyfall was the most attended Bond film yet so I'm hoping that Spectre can be the first Bond film to break out here.

Also no Bourne film has achieved more than 2 million admissions but to be fair to the series, all the best installments came out when the South Korean box office was no where near the size it is right now. I prefer not to count legacy...

Kingsman is the first film released in the current calander year to reach 5 million admissions, a result even the most optimistic person couldn't have forseen. It is also the fourth most attended R rated film of all time (the highest among foreign releases) and the 20th biggest foreign release overall. Among the international markets, the Korean gross accounts for close to 30% of the total. So  given all this I think it may be worthwhile to take a step back and see what made Korea fall so madly in love with the spy thriller.

#difficult times, vicarious satisfaction
Although there are criticisms aimed at Kingsman over it being too gruesome or too predictable, I think no one can deny that it is a fun movie to watch. In a time where the economy, society and political situation are all in a state of flux, and the real estate market is hitting the ceiling while the paycheck remains the same, there are many young people that don't get to enjoy their youth, substituting it for hard work and long hours. Watching films remains a popular pasttime that doesn't require much time or monetary investment and many people probably won't want to spend that time watching anything too serious. In this sense, Kingsman fit the need of the society perfectly. Watching a loser like Eggsy, who is easily identifiable to the everyday person, becoming a super spy served to bring relief and satisfaction to the stressed out people and in a vicarious fashion.

#breaking the spy films=for guys mold
Up to now, spy films like 007 and the bourne series have been seen as mostly exclusive property for guys with little to no appeal to women. This is reflected in their respective box office results. Kingsman on the other hand managed to captivate the women demography with an overwhelming presale ratio of 33.2:66.8 in favour of women on CGV.  The two male leads in Colin Firth and Taron Egerton dressed fashionably in suits, displaying British accents and gentlemanly mannerisms seemed to appeal to the female audience in a big way. Most of the SNS buzz was also centered around this demography.

#favourable release date
Pre-release, Kingsman wasn't expected to be a hit. Colin Firth was known for his roles in Love actually and Bridget Jones diary etc but wasn't really a draw up to that point and Taron Egerton was virtually unknown. Add to that the fact that it was an R-rated movie had many people pessimistic for it's chances.

The fact that it was released during the Lunar new year holiday period when local films are traditionally strong made it even more unpredictable. During the initial stages of its release, Detective K: Secret of the lost island drew the bigger crowd but legs failed to hold for it post-holidays. Subsequent releases such as C'est Ci bon and 50 shades of grey which did so well in other international markets failed to pose any significant competition and Kingsman was able to reap the benefits.

What happened to cause a big Whiplash rise?

After watching Korean shows, I'm going to guess the learning the classical music aspect played a huge part in attracting Korean movie goers. But I could be wrong.

What happened to cause a big Whiplash rise?

After watching Korean shows, I'm going to guess the learning the classical music aspect played a huge part in attracting Korean movie goers. But I could be wrong.

Whiplash is getting pretty great word of mouth. Many critics & moviegoers call it masterpiece. That's the biggest reason.

Whiplash is a new Begin Again...

Agree with all of this. Korean people definitely like good music in films so that aspect played a part and is one of the reasons some people are drawing comparisons to Begin Again (although the music in that film was a different kind entirely).  Being a music themed thriller has gotten many people intrigued since it's a combination not seen too often on the big screen. Add to that, the fact that mainstream Korea films are in a  very bad place right now quality wise has many people are looking for something fresh, and whiplash seems to have fit the bill as did Kingsman before it.

So... Kingsman is making it's run for 6M :D (very very very optimitic) but 5.5 is locked isn't it?

I wouldn't go as far as to say it's a lock but pretty strong chance that it happens. There's a local film called 'Twenty' that opens next week as does insurgent and both of them will probably take away a large chunk of the audience from Kingsman so 6 million looks unlikely...but who knows with this beast  :P

Pretty exciting news! It says that the main cast and crew of TA will be visiting Korea for a promotion tour on the 16th and 17th of april, a week before the release of age of ultron. This includes Joss whedon, RDJ, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans (the three most popular actors in Korea that feature in The Avengers) and Soo-Hyun (korean actress).
