A Marvel Fanboy
Catching Fire held on to its box office crown with ease as an estimated $92.5m through 79 Lionsgate International markets boosted the running total after two full sessions to $276.4m. Thor: The Dark World crossed $400m for Marvel/Disney. As the worldwide running total reached $572.8m, the young adult action sequel delivered an $11.5m number one result in France from 2,427 screens that was more than three times greater than the launch of the original film last year. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire opened at number one in Italy through Universal Pictures International on $6.2m from 450 sites to exceed the lifetime total of the original by 55%. The film arrived in Belgium on $2.3m for the biggest launch of the year-to-date. The film’s second full session – it opened in Brazil a week earlier and has taken $14.1m there – means it stands at $35.3m in the lead market of the UK, $24.5m in Germany, $22.2m in Australia, $19.6m in Russia and $16.7m across Scandinavia. Catching Fire has grossed $16.5m in Mexico, $9.7m in Spain, $5.6m in South Korea, $5.5m in the Philippines and $4.3m in Taiwan for further impressive results in those two Asian markets, especially given the devastation caused in the Philippines by Typhoon Haiyan. The Netherlands has generated $3.9m, New Zealand $3.6m and Singapore $3.5m, while Thailand, Turkey and Malaysia have each produced $3m. The film arrives in India on December 6 and Japan on December 27. The film took $2.5m from 250 IMAX screens for a $9m running total. The global tally on IMAX stands at $32m. CJohn
Catching Fire doubles the OW of THG here. First sold 35000 tickets, this one sold 70000 tickets. It doesn't come close to Twilight, which the last 4 movies each sold 200000 tickets on their first 4 days (BD2 set the OW record last year with 225000, it is untouchable).
