The Warner Bros. Thread | Will NOT merge with Paramount...capitalism is still terrible

Here's what Finacial Times has said recently about WBD selling to Comcast and why it's not happening anytime soon.

Unless the stock recovers significantly — it is down 40 per cent since the Warner-Discovery deal closed — a sale would be a blow for Zaslav and the rest of his team. Not to mention AT&T, whose shareholders were left owning 71 per cent of the company after offloading it at a steep discount from its initial $85bn purchase price. The shares are up 50 per cent this year to $15.10, still well below the closing price of $24.47 when the stock began trading in April 2021. For Zaslav to exercise the extravagant options awards he received, the shares will need to reach prices ranging from $35.65 to $43.33. “That theory comes up that, well, they’re just going to wait and sell it to [Comcast]. But the stock has to be higher than what it is trading at today,” a former Warner executive said earlier this year.

So, the merger means that the NBA playoff telecasts so far (at least from TNT) are flooded with ads for Dr Pimple Popper. I actually do like both (I remember when she only had a YouTube channel), but based on the tweets, it seems these fanbases don't really overlap.

So, I see why the execs changed the name, not to MAX (very generic) but away from HBO [Whatever]. In the glory days of cable, HBO got away with having all the Emmy winning series/movies on the same channel with "documentaries" like Taxicab Confessions and The Cathouse. But now, the same conglomerate is offering Succession and Dr Pimple Popper...

In an ideal world, maybe Warner and Discovery never merge, or they keep their services separate. It's happened, though, so maybe it's not the worst thing if 90 Day Fiance (and the like) aren't in any way "HBO" shows. And for now at least, the HBO brand/ethos still exists under the MAX umbrella.

Good luck with the stock quickly rising for that to happen. (although WB is now pretty obviously hobbled by debt load and can't market its stuff properly.

Also, 10 year commitments on TV shows are pretty common. GoT cast the Stark kids knowing they would be important down the line and hoping the actors would measure up - with decidedly mixed results at the end but nothing downright bad.

Even in sitcoms, you had Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen be on Full House for close to a decade alongside the other kid actors as well.

It's pretty much a common thing on shows which we have forgotten since shows rarely run that long anymore.

A Harry Potter TV series sounds more labor intensive than a standard sitcom though, no? These kids are leads too, not just supporting characters to their parents hijinks.

i can't tell if harry potter will be the biggest tv show ever or another rings of power. maybe it'll be like the mandalorian where it's huge for a year or two and then just kind of become background noise

mando is still big with audiences.

So, it looks like WBD *ucked up another marketing campaign for another release. Now it's "Evil Dead Rise". I'm just speechless.

They apparently don’t have enough money to do elaborate marketing campaigns for most of their movies. They’re prioritizing The Flash.

In fairness, the only reason WBD is doing any of this is because Zaslav is looking to sell pronto so he's just salting the mine with some gold flakes before he offers it to buyers.

Why do you think they announced more LOTR movies, a brand new DC Universe, and new Harry Potter-stuff despite the fact that WB is saddled with debt and losing money?

Those IPs haven't exactly been gaining in value in the past few years so he needs to juice them up a bit just long enough for someone to buy them.

Even doing this lavish 100 Years Celebration while also actively gutting WB suddenly makes more sense when you realize that he wants to keep the brand name and library looking valuable.

So basically, Zaslav is either a Bob Iger wannabe who’s way in over his head, or he’s the Hollywood equivalent of a used car salesman.

It is also a case that Evil Dead dd not cost that much money and has a automatic audienc from Horror movie fans, whereas the Flash is extermtly expensive, no matter which set of figures you buy. "Flaah" is in "Too Bit To Fail" terriroty; it is going to get priority.

Problem is Zaslev can't sell pronto, he needs to get the stock price up.
