Maoyan Forecast

¥108M SUN / ¥414M OW / ¥1000M Final

Tomorrow's projections seems reasonable compared to the past 2 days. But oof that final prediction has come down from 358 million before opening to 143 million USD now. That's terrible.

By this prediction, it might not pass JWD's box office (¥1.06 billion) as the highest foreign film of the year for China. Let's hope it edges out in the end.🥲

If the situation with the COVID in China continues like this, Even "The wandering earth 2" and all the films of the new year festival will be flop at the box office

Yea I'm very curious how many will move or if they'll be forced to stay. I can't see this situation getting much better in a month. TWE2 would probably do $750M+ without all of these issues.

Maybe not. These weeks are critical both because the covid wave is surging and because this the time where Chinese people will be "forced" to learn to live with Covid , with the deaths and with the fear . The way most of the globe did somewhat unfortunately.

China chose its own way with Zero Covid and for the first couple of years before the super contagious Omicron and while vaccines were still in development you can make a great argument that it was the correct approach for them .

But now its not sustainable for various reasons and this period rn represents the painful transition from what China was doing for years  and the mentality people had towards the virus to where the rest of the world is. How high and disruptive the covid surge will be, how quickly will the Chinese people learn to "normalize" the new reality and situation on their heads and "move on", handling their fear and hesitency? Who knows . Maybe they will handle it better than other countries , the bulk of the wave will be over by late january and people will force themselves to "move on" with the new covid reality, ignoring the new fear and pains this period brings

Are the Chinese aware that in the rest of the world no one talks about COVID anymore ? Everyone is gathered in bars, stadiums, outside and at home with family or friends but in China they are still stuck in 2020, it's a shame that China is so closed and is moving further and further away from the rest of the world (In addition they could have had the American vaccines which are much more effective and we will not be there today)

Different situation, who is to say that which approach is better? China used its money on keeping death count low for 3 years, It's just different tactic.

China's zero covid approach was great in 2020 but after the introduction of vaccines they should have lifted the restrictions. Look at situation in India similar population as China but got of covid much faster. It's not like covid has gone forever. People will need to live with the virus.

Yes but their vaccine is less effective and then anyway with a population of 1.5B inhabitants the zero covid policy will never work there will always be infected people you just have to learn to live with it like everywhere else

Yes that's why they open now with relatively high vax rate (even though it's less effective) and a less deadly variant. They will need to learn to live with it gradually but with precedence set by other countries, they might adapt faster than other countries did.

I think Chinese people are well aware of where the rest of the world is with Covid and what is happening. The enviable and the less so. Surely better than the understanding of most people outside of China of what was and is happening in China regarding Covid.

What is happening rn is due to China deciding to approach the virus like the rest of the world has, not because they chose to stay stuck to 2020. I dont think i have all the parameters to judge if what China was doing for the last couple of years was net positive or net negative for the people there ,i'll leave that to the Chinese people and i wouldnt be surprise at all if their judgement is different than how people think about it from the outside based on the coverage it got. Whatever they did for the last few years and weighting the pain it brought to the Chinese people with how many lives it saved compared to other approaches thats not for me to say and neither is this the place.

Western vaccines wouldnt have really changed much because we know from territories (Singapore, HK , Phillipines ) that had both Chinese and western vaccines that the Chinese are only slightly worse after 3 doses and because even with western vaccines a population of 1.4 billion that opens up to covid would have had huge issues, huge infection number and huge death toll. They wouldnt have  signficantly changed how China behaved or how hard it would get hit rn

Again this all doesnt matter. China for better of for worse stalled having to learn to live with Covid and leting it rip through the population for as much as they could with whatever consequences that brought or whatever positives it did. Now they are in a better position to deal with it than they were 1 or 2 years ago but it will still hurt a lot. If im sad for something is that even with lower death rates than they would have back then and with vaccines , hundreds of thousands will probably still die. So i hope for the best
