Community Manager Water Bottle Posted January 19, 2013 Community Manager Share Posted January 19, 2013 Why wasn't Showgirls a hit? Femme Fatale? Jennifer's Body? Chloe? The list goes on. Men don't care if a movie has an attractive woman in it. They need another reason to see it outside of that. For me, TCM 3D is an example. I would see it regardless of who was in it since it's a horror film. The casting was just a bonus. If they want to look at said woman, that's what the Internet is for. Women apparently don't other than to swoon at Gosling, Tatum, Songz, etc. because they apparently, haven't heard of said Internet. That's probably because guys can just go on the internet and search for porn for free, so you might be right that guys don't go to movies to see hot girls. They do go to see movies where the action looks amazing and it's a big "event" but they do seem to be declining to go see non-event movies. Actually leatherface is right. Men don't go to movies anymore and there is a consederable research backing it. Most researchers think illegal downloading is the real culprit as men are more likely to be illegal downloaders. Most studios are adjusting accordingly as you don't see them throwing big money at "male genre" (action).Yeah, I don't think that's true as illegal downloading isn't THAT big. I think it's that men are now more likely to spend money on expensive video games so they probably don't go to the theaters as often for that reason. OR I don't know, maybe they spend more time on Netflix? There's probably many reasons on why men don't go to the theaters as often.
TLK
Illegal downloading is huge. The estimated revenue losses for studios are in the $25 billion annual range.
Jessie
I'm suprised no-one has said Men are smarter than Women hence they don't fall for some of the shit Hollywood release just to get a few vaginas in movie seats. Now just to clarify, I'm not saying this as its a sexist statement, I'm just suprised no-one else has

Ozymandias
I blame trash like Twilight and The Hunger Games for this if it is true. Men hate these vagina films and rightly so.

Walt Disney
The top movies thus far this year have all drawn more women than men as I don't have the data yet for Mama but since it's a horror film, it most likely sold more tickets to women than men as even Texas Chainsaw 3D did (52 to 48%) and it's a slasher more likely to draw men. Zero Dark Thirty drew more women as well and looking back at last year, you had huge hits like Magic Mike, The Hunger Games, Twilight, and The Vow that all were heavily skewed towards women.Men seem to only see the big event films as The Avengers was 60-40 in favor of males. Outside of a select few like that film, women seem to outnumber men going to movies quite a bit. You can have a hit without drawing men but you can't without drawing women at least some. The Vow had like a 70-30 split in women's favor. You can't have that with a male skewing film and have it actually be a hit. It'll be interesting to see the split on The Last Stand, if we even do. I bet it has something like the 70-30 in favor of males. Lo and behold, it's a huge flop. Why is this? Are men just more preoccupied/interested in watching sports and video games? Do women have more free time?Men see the big budget blockbusters because those are the movies that are made well. If a movie is well made and guy oriented, then guys will see it. There are a lot of bad movies that are being made and guys aren't just going to run to see it. They'd rather see The Avengers 3 times. I didn't see Texas Chainsaw Massacre because I saw it years ago, and I am not paying for the same recycled movie. I didn't see Dredd because I loved Judge Dredd and don't need to see reboots. I saw Skyfall, which is a guy movie, because it was a good movie that I knew would deliver. Hollywood has been very lazy lately for the most part, and maybe men are just pickier when it comes to movies than women are.

Walt Disney
Movies like Skyfall, Avengers, TDKR, ect. are not guy movies. Expendables, Judge Dredd, The Last Stand ect. are guy movies. The Avengers, TDKR, and especially Skyfall are guy movies. Marvel superheroes and DC superheroes are male-centric stories. Guys have been reading those stories for generations. The superhero genre is almost exclusively male oriented. Bringing those stories to life is making a guy movie. They happened to break out and appeal to women as well, but that doesn't change the fact that they are... at their core... guy movies.James Bond has been a classic male archetype for 50 years. There is no better definition of a guy movie than a James Bond movie. He is this suave secret agent that always gets the girl. This is the classic example of a guy movie. Just because a movie or franchise becomes mainstream doesn't change what that movie is at its core. At its core, James Bond is a classic guy movie. The same way that Titanic doesn't become less of a chick flick just because it crossed over, TA, TDKR, and James Bond movies do not become neutral just because women take an interest in them. Another reason why female films might do better at the box office is females are more likely to go with a big group of friends whereas a couple of guys might just go and see a movie together. Webslinger
Horror movies actually skew more female than one might think, especially among teenagers. One of the teachers I worked with last fall said she thought it was a combination of wanting to experience fear and show boys they share some interests. This point was backed up anecdotally when we were going to show a horror movie to a 7th grade class, and the girls were way more excited and had many more viewing suggestions than the boys. DeeCee
The answer is no. Women see less then a few years ago.In 2010 women purchased a lower proportion of the movie tickets (down from 55% of movie tickets in 2009), driven particularly by decreased attendance among women who attend frequently. In 2010, the only gender group that purchased more tickets than 2009 was male frequent moviegoers.http://www.wfc-capital-group.com/downloads/MR10_MPAA%202010%20Report.pdf
Lordmandeep
TA and TDK appealed to guys but the reason they broke out is because they appealed to Women.I think guys only come out in force for big action blockbusters like Transformers, Comic Book films and such....So in reality its young men and boys are not goin to the theater but when they do records got smashed.
