He's a great writer, but he's pretty much in deep with Pixar. He's not really indicative of a consensus.

Yup but it's more on a personal level since his taste in movies (mainstream ones that is) is most of the time in line with my taste

Edit: I agree those animators would be good mentors for the up and coming but I think Pixar needs to change this push aside people who has shepherded a movie idea to its near completion for another director. I think a better idea would be to bring in smart people to help directors through their problems. For instance, I know Madagascar 3 wasn't some feat of great art but I think bringing Noah Baumbach to work through some story problems was a good thing for the story and the entire team working on that movie.

Unfortunately, I think Chapman is as good as gone but more importantly other people at Pixar could look at the situation and look to exit the studio out of disgust to the way Chapman was treated or worst, they don't put their foot forward out of fear they'll be treated the same way (if things go wrong on their movie).

I agree with all this wholeheartedly, hence my complaining about management. The talent there does not seem to be as nurtured as they were in the past (or as well as we thought they were). Like I keep saying, nothing against Mark Andrews, but this is and should be Chapman's baby... You're telling me Pixar couldn't find a supporting story person to help her out?

In any case, I keep saying this is transition. The same 3-4 directors can't be doing all the movies all the time. Something's gotta give at some point, and they'll figure out how to best nurture talent if they want to succeed.

It's pretty apparent this movie simply isn't as good as usual Pixar. No point hoping it somehow shoots all the way back into the 80s now.

I think the frustrating thing (from what we've been reading and hearing anyway) is that it very well could have been as good as "usual" Pixar. They started off well again, but this time just couldn't tie it all together in the end as well as they usually do (again - based on reviews).

If it beats Cars I'll be happy. That's wishful thinking at this point.

Interesting assessment from one of the rotten reviews:

"This film has the veneer of feminism and a strong female protagonist, but it still reinforces a lot of patriarchal constructs. The resolution appears progressive on the surface, but it is only possible with several conditions that are ultimately very conservative. Brave is the equivalent of a man patting a woman on the head and saying, ‘Go and exercise your free-will sweetie, but just make sure you play by my rules. Isn’t self-determination cute!"

Hmm.
