Sources online cannot seem to agree if Transformers made 97 million or more than 97 million.  I'm not sure why this is...

Transformers opening result via digitally selling/recording let assume the 3-days was under the reported $100m.

Only a small percentage of 'seats' possible within the sum of all is still reported manually (~ 3%). Several magazines or BO specialized companies... have access to the digitally reported numbers (via Rentrak). If the percentage of the 'old fashioned' equipment cinemas was nearly the same as the modern ones, the 3 days was under the $100m.

The studio reported higher => started some ... let's say it heated discussions and some not so very nice comments.

One indicator for maybe not so perfect bookkeeping named by people without full access to Rentrak... was:

they'll take away a bit of the following days results... to recognize in a bit harsher drop. Lots of people say the drop was harsh.

The discrepancy is still mentioned in some of the summer analyzing articles.

I say the discrepancy of under 3% was still within in the modest area / percentage for the OW estimations (not the same as final numbers), so it might have looked too 'bad' if saying later on it was under it in this case (too much reported already), so... not that bad of a crime, but really annoying for correct charts and so on.

Shawn mentioned it in his Summer Review article too:

The $90 Million Cluster

Box office enthusiasts have taken interest in one curious trend this year: films opening in the $90 million range. Entering 2014, seven films had bowed somewhere $90-99 million throughout the years. Since April alone, we've seen five more (nearly six when counting controversial reports of the latest Transformers' debut).

Personally I accept both numbers, as in the end my main interest is in final numbers. Others might see it in another way.
