I'm telling you, this forum turns to crickets after the holidays end ha ha. Like someone said a few days ago, those of us who show up for weekdays in January are the die-hards I guess :P

I thought it was interesting how near the top Patriots Day is really the only outlier there, with a better decline than the other films above it, but otherwise pretty much uniform declines. Whether or not it's "good" for Rogue One, I don't know, but it does seem like it's certainly normal as every film did about the same percent of business Monday as compared to Sunday.

Seriously...

It's actually a good idea, tbh. No one cares about either of the Super Bowl openers (Rings and The Space Between Us), and the January 13/20 openers (except Split) will be losing theaters quickly, not mention the older releases will be pushed out.

Arrival is coming back to 1,100 theaters this weekend ($100M should be locked now), and Lion will be expanding to 1,800+ theaters on February 3.

Weinstein is ridiculous. It should expand this weekend lmao. But they too busy with their mega bomb Gold.

I don't know why they decided to sabatoge their films (Gold, Founder) by dumping both at the end of January with so much adults/awards contenders also in theaters.

To be fair, Gold has poor reviews, so it probably wasn't gonna do well anywhere.

Gold was doomed anyway. They were counting on that Oscar nomination for best original song. The Founder deserved another type of treatment which we already discussed.

True but it made more sense to keep it in July/August  so you can try to get some summer weekday dollars and counterprogram. The Founder i would have left in November and expanded around Thanksgiving.

They're so lucky that Lion is catching on and could possibly be a 30m+ grosser.

While Harvey has always been good at the Oscar game - the actual Box Office game has never been his strong cup of tea (obvious flukes not withstanding.)

Not much to say about Monday's numbers other than everything seems normal - Today should see some stronger than normal bumps for the Oscar films but it's getting harder and harder to judge with the way Tuesdays have become.

Super Bowl Weekend is another real dud of a weekend almost every year. Not like any January or February weekend is usually that amazing, Deadpool aside, but yikes that's a rough weekend to WANT to open a movie frankly.

The Space Between Us looks like utter garbage. I laughed when I first saw that trailer many months ago. Then again, can I say Rings looks a lot better? No, not really. It looks pretty awful too, but I think I could tolerate watching Rings which is more than I can say of The Space Between Us, melodramatic looking garbage.

It's a good thing Resident Evil comes out this weekend because it's not like xXx is making good use of those IMAX screens. Don't get me wrong, Resident Evil won't either, but it'll be better than the 2nd weekend of xXx in IMAX, anyway. If you really wanted to see xXx in IMAX I feel like you would have done so right away. Nobody else really cared lol.
