Maybe the studios should stop rebooting/making endless sequels to properties and make something new or at least find something new/different to adapt.
Maleficent might be doing so well because it's unique. A retelling of a known fairy tale. Not exactly original, but it did have an original spin on a classic movie that we haven't gotten five installments of in the past decade. Moviegoers are going to get tired of all these remakes/quasi-sequels and what-not and this summer is a perfect example of that happening.
Okay, so if Apes does $14 million Saturday...
Fri - $10.4
Sat - $14 (+35%)
Sun - $10.1 (-28%)
That's $34.5 million, which would only be a 53% drop (only 4% more than Rise)
Damn good if you ask me. It's completely rebounded after taking bigger hits Wednesday/Thursday.
I didnt see Malifecent and I don't plan to until maybe Red Box and while as an X-Men fan it sucks to see it getting out grossed, it is good to see SOMETHING this summer doing a lot better than expected. So go, Mal, help redeem the summer a bit.
Wow. Great number for Apes. That's like a 75% Friday increase. Locks $30 million for the weekend and could near $35 million depending on how Sat/Sun play out.
It's probably hard for Planes to flop anyway. I can't imagine these things are made with a big gross in mind, it's pretty much only there to continue promoting the Cars brand.
