  3. Variety's take. http://variety.com/2014/film/news/cannes-film-festival-early-pics-include-tommy-lee-jones-the-homesman-how-to-train-your-dragon-2-1201157859/ Also saw this on twitter - palace films ‏@palacefilms 21m french sales agent tweets that no femme French directors are in Cannes competition. and that Assayas, Bonello and Hazanavicius are in.
  4. So $440 OS + $240 DOM = $ 680 million Worldwide. Who is with me ?
  5. No, that's not how it works in business world and no one is stupid enough to try this in the movie world either. Marvel has Avengers. Thor and Captain America are its rising franchises but what else do they have ? If GOTG underperforms and then they sacrifice CA3 then where does that place TA3 when they no longer have Iron Man franchise to fall back upon ?
  6. The Film Stage ‏@TheFilmStage 1h Alejandro González Iñárritu's 'Birdman' will open on October 17th after a likely fall festival premiere. Searchlight says no Cannes.
  7. Gitesh Pandya ‏@giteshpandya 1m NEW #CaptainAmerica #WinterSoldier grosses: $260.3M intl, $117.6M dom, $377.9M global. Near $500M by SUN.
  8. Horror movies always start surging late in the week so while I am not expecting 20 million, I won't be surprised if it makes that much.
  9. Captain America will do around $40 million. Marvel sequels are frontloaded and it is facing good competition this week.
  10. Why is everyone so hung up on Rio's reviews ? It is a sequel that will appeal to kids and the reviews are about as irrelevant as they can be.
  11. Woody Allen's Magic In The Moonlight is going to be released on 25th July so the chances are very good that it will premiere at Cannes. It won't be in competition though as that's not Woody Allen's thing
  12. I am not going to derail the thread and these is nothing wrong with your arguments but this is all besides the point. Studies have shown that national championships raise the profile of schools and can generate (tens of ) millions of dollars in alumni contributions, corporate contracts and sales of jerseys etc. Now you know that there is a 5 star High School player who can help you get there and one of your rival school is willing to pay a million dollars to get him in. What do you do ? Ok, you take the high road. Your rival wins the national championship. So what do you do next year ? The system is setup to be abused. These players are not morons. They have these million dollar coaches camping outside their homes and ESPN crews taping their high school games. They know what they are worth and it isn't a $1500 per month scholarship.
  13. Box Office has nothing to do with talent though. There are plenty of male actors who are big stars in name only these days. Travolta, Schwarzenegger, Spacey and the list goes on.
  14. It is a feature not a bug. When these sports generate billions in revenues and the players make less than couple of grands per month then the system is set up to be abused.
  15. I think $700 million WW is unlikely even with $90-100 million from China. $650 million is a more realistic target and ultimately it will end up in the same ballpark as Thor2.
  16. Nikki : 35 million+ THR 37 million+ Variety 36-39 million RTH 36-38 million So the numbers/estimates have held steady throughout the day.
  17. I am not sure if this is a good thing but Nikki is in agreement with me.
  18. I don't think $45 million will happen because of weaker matinees. $35-40 million is more likely.
  19. Rotten Tomatoes is killing film criticism and I say as someone who is completely agnostic on this issue. Most people who want to check the type of reviews a movie is getting only check RT score so it is a black box that outputs a movie score and it doesn't really matter whether the input is coming from 100 legit critics + 100 bloggers or 20 legit critics+180 bloggers. Quality of criticism is really irrelevant as long as you are capable of assigning a score out of 10 to a movie.
  20. Yep, IFC is not going to campaign for more than a couple of movies so that's a positive even if the distributor has limited resources. IFC's awards lineup will be Boyhood, maybe a documentary and a foreign/non-English movie. That's it.
  21. Dreamworks is in a lot of trouble so NFS2 isn't gonna happen.
