  1. They have a good summer lineup but this isn't an okay start. All 4 movies have bombed.
  2. This is just sad for WB. They are probably losing money on all 4 movies.
  3. This has a budget of $235 million and Disney spend a ton on marketing. Nothing short of $500 million Worldwide will do in this case. So what are the chances that this will make $500 million+?
  4. I think this is a logical move. This is a highly trafficked website and they sell tickets which means they have actual hard data. Full Article at Variety http://variety.com/2013/digital/news/fandango-launches-movie-tracking-feature-1200005345/ Fandango is getting into the box office tracking action with a new movie buzz meter that collects and analyzes the ticketing site’s online and mobile traffic. Announced Friday at the South by Southwest Film Fest, Fandango is calling the weekly online feature “Fanticipation.” The public-faced tracking tool ranks user participation for upcoming and current films, as well as accounts for social media engagement and advanced ticket sales.
  5. This press release is important because we almost never get any raw numbers from studios. Here is the Top 20 sales chart http://www.homemediamagazine.com/top-sellers/top-20-sellers-week-ended-030313 BD2 1&2 sold an additional 830k discs. Argo sold 580k discs in its second week. Skyfall sold 470k discs in its third week. My guess is that Twilight franchise must have sold over 5 million discs this past weekend.
  6. No, they are still a joke. If they want to be taken seriously they should move them to the real awards season. May/June frame is great if you are going for blockbuster type flicks. Who is going to give a shit about Django Unchained in May/June 2013?
  7. Yeah but that card doesn't explain all the crap movies she has done since Juno.
  8. There is another very obvious name. People have mentioned Ben Affleck but no one mentions Jennifer Garner. She was the next big thing after Alias but hasn't done anything memorable since then. I can only think of one hit movie she has been in and that was Juno.
  9. Better Saturday numbers for Jack. http://www.deadline.com/2013/03/big-budget-jack-the-giant-slayer-bombs-on-bad-weekend-for-3-new-films/#utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter 1. 10. Aniston is not a flop. She was the queen of bad romcom before anyone had even heard of Katherine Heigl. Her problem is that she may be a bit too old for some of the roles that made her famous a decade ago. Her mojo page. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/people/chart/?id=jenniferaniston.htm
  11. Hess also directed Nacho Libre. It made $80 million domestically on a $35 million budget and had mixed reviews. Touch Of Evil is one of the greatest movies ever made. If you are a cinephile you have to watch it. At a minimum, google the opening scene. Virgin Suicides and Lost In Translation.
  12. 2013 Stats via Rotten Tomatoes Wide Releases : 24 Fresh : 3 Rotten : 21 The quality has been shit this year.
  13. Amy Kaufman ‏@AmyKinLA I'm hearing that "Phantom" may have only made $175,000 from 1,118 theaters on Friday. #BoxOfficeJawDroppers
  14. Sandra Bullock isn't getting nominated this year. This is one thing I am sure of. Secondly, I think this is going to be a weaker year in terms of entertaining nominees. Most of the movies on the list appear to be very Oscar-baity. Look at Weinsteins' lineup with movies about Mandela and Grace Kelly.
  15. Weinstein Company has just released their "Oscar schedule". Grace of Monaco Weinstein Company 12/27/13 New Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom Weinstein Company 11/29/13 New August: Osage County Weinstein Company 11/8/13 New Fruitvale Weinstein Company 10/18/13 New
  16. There are plenty of fairy tale movies in the pipeline. You have a GDT movie (BATB), Jolie movie , Cinderella movie with Emma Watson and there are probably others.
  17. 2X rule means it will need $400 million WW to break even. I don't see it making $300 million+ from overseas markets, not when Oz and Gi Joe are potentially more attractive movies. I think the best case scenario is $80 million domestic + $250 million overseas which won't be sufficient. I do wonder what kind of shelf life movies like this can expect. Is it possible that movies based on ageless fairy tales can keep making money for a longer duration from the home media markets compared to more contemporary blockbusters ? Is this why studios don't mind investing this kind of money for movies like this?
  18. The movie quality has been awful this year. I think most releases this year have ended up rotten on RT.
  19. Agree. The last bit was completely unnecessary and it was probably added at the insistence of the studio. It is pretty clear where the director wanted to end the movie.
  20. Gigli is just a horrible movie. This is one of those rare movies that deserve all the scorn they get. With a more competent director.editor etc. the movie would've been passable. The screenplay isn't that bad and I blame bad acting on the director too.
  21. I think Affleck is good enough to do blockbuster type movies both as an actor and a director. He is about the same age as Leo and Matt Damon. He is younger than RDJ, Depp and Tom Cruise. There is no reason why a high profile guy like him can't have a good acting career. As I mentioned earlier he has made good acting choices recently with the Malick movie and the one with Russell Crowe.
  22. I think Affleck did a string of really bad movies which hurt his acting career but the whole comeback thing is more Oscar campaign fiction than reality. He has been constantly working as an actor. Hell, he is in a Terrence Malick movie and I remember him doing a movie with Russell Crowe a couple of years ago.
  23. If you get mercilessly attacked like she was ( and still is), self-doubt may start to creep in. My problem is that mobs don't know when to stop. Say your piece and move on. She somehow became one of the biggest villains on the internet just because she valued an Oscar more than it should be valued.
  24. Ang Lee is criminally under-rated director. There aren't many top Hollywood directors who would've touched movies like Brokeback Mountain and Life Of Pi.
  25. Even more inexplicable is the hate for Ane Hathaway. I think the simple explanation is that soft misogyny is ingrained in a lot of people. People hated Anne Hathaway because she came across as too ambitious and too driven to win the award. Most people don't like drive and ambition in women. Edit - I really didn't get the problem with Kristen Stewart at the Oscars. She was on the stage for 30 seconds and she did ok. I mean, Paul Rudd was worse and no one is trashing him. Of course, she never smiles but that's ok too. There are male actors like that. Phoenix is an obvious example. Harrison Ford used to be a lot worse. Let people be who they are. These things won't be fun if all actors and actresses acted exactly the same all the time.
