  1. Adding Asian characters in a film is rarely a draw in itself for Chinese audiences unless they are played by someone really well-known. Rogue One had Donnie Yen (one of the biggest names in China), and that still only propelled it to $69 million.
  2. Christmas on Friday is probably the best as far as getting the softest second-weekend drop possible. But I can't say whether or not this actually results in a higher box office total in the end compared to a calendar arrangement like you described. The other consensus seems to be that you don't want the 24th or 30th of December to land on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. But again, it's hard to say whether the depressed turnout over the weekend is fully compensated later on by the stronger holiday weekdays.
  3. I think others posted here that 2020 would be the most favorable for its box office performance. Same calendar arrangement as the first film and TFA, with Christmas Day on Friday.
  4. Very true about the lack of interest in China for all the Jedi drama. It will be interesting to see if TLJ beats Valerian, which made $62 million in China.
  5. After seeing Wolf Warriors 2 overperform out of nowhere with $850 million, I would be very surprised if Avatar 2 doesn't hit $1 billion in China.
  6. Avatar 2 OS > TFA OS + TLJ OS might have a chance of happening. Not WW and certainly not DOM though.
  7. Will be interesting to see whether TLJ ends up O/U Jurassic World ($1,671,713,208).
  8. It seems only a very limited number of theaters are opening next year at best. I guess we have to wait a long time before Saudi Arabia contributes a meaningful amount to a film's box office.
  9. The first point is very true, and we can see that reflected in the DOM/OS ratio of the Star Wars films. The domestic gross for TLJ is most likely going to be close to 50% of the WW total again. In China, TFA and Rogue One only earned around 13% of what the films earned domestically. That's abnormally low for a major blockbuster (30-50% seems the average, with certain films even going above 100% of domestic) and just shows the huge disparity in interest for the Star Wars franchise.
  10. These view count numbers are listed as being across multiple platforms. I can't find relevant articles for JW's 24-hour views (likely because it wasn't record-breaking) except on an archived Wikipedia article. https://ipfs.io/ipfs/QmXoypizjW3WknFiJnKLwHCnL72vedxjQkDDP1mXWo6uco/wiki/List_of_most_viewed_online_videos_in_first_24_hours.html#cite_note-40 The numbers for Ultron can be confirmed though, so I believe that list is valid for the most part. "Within 24 hours, the trailer for the May 1, 2015 film tallied 34.3 million global views, according to parent company Disney. About 26.2 million of those clicks came from Marvel’s YouTube account, which would have been enough to leave the studio’s previous superhero trailers in the dust." http://ew.com/article/2014/10/24/avengers-age-of-ultron-trailer-record/
  11. I can't find the source for the exact 24-hour views of JW (the 13.3 million number was from an archived list), but the others can be confirmed on Deadline or accredited sources. That said, there are a number of articles/blog posts that can narrow down the range. "Last week the other major movie trailer for 2014 – that of Jurassic Park sequel Jurassic World – was also released, drawing 38 million views in the five days since it was released." http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/star-wars-7-force-awakens-trailer-tops-40-million-views-become-biggest-2014-1477434 "The trailer for JURASSIC WORLD hit the web yesterday, two days earlier than scheduled, and already it’s garnering 16.2 Million views and counting on Universal Pictures’ YouTube channel". http://www.ramascreen.com/jurassic-world-gate-will-be-practical-real-wood-concrete-and-steel/ Thanks for linking the first week numbers though. If JW2 finishes far below that, then we should probably be concerned.
  12. Not within the first 24 hours though, which is my point about most of the fans rushing to see the trailer. Most of the views for Jurassic World came much later. Views within the first 24 hours: Star Wars: The Force Awakens – Trailer (Official) 112 million views Avengers: Age of Ultron – Trailer #3 35 million views Avengers: Age of Ultron – Trailer #2 34.3 million views Jurassic World – Official Trailer 13.3 million views
  13. Not as good as the original JW trailer of course, but I have no doubt the hype will be there before release. Universal are very successful at marketing their big franchises globally, and there's much we haven't seen yet. Future teasers/trailers should properly focus on the darker and more suspenseful tone in this film.
  14. I found it very interesting that Avatar is still the highest grossing film of all-time in Hong Kong and Taiwan. Also impressive was the fact that Avatar held that same record in China for over 4 years. Chinese audiences seemed to really enjoy it, and I hope that nostalgia carries over to the sequels. After seeing Wolf Warriors 2 break-out and gross $850 million, I'm really not sure what the ceiling for Avatar 2 is anymore.
  15. @Olive Skywalker Can you confirm Avatar is also top-grossing movie in Taiwan? Box Office Mojo says it made only $13.6 million but Wikipedia article says 1.1 billion TWD (35-36 million in USD). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_highest-grossing_films_in_Taiwan
  16. According to Olive, shorts are not shown in Chinese theaters because they require extra quota from the government.
  17. I had Ferdinand followed by Sherlock Gnomes. I was cringing through the fart jokes in both trailers. Not one laugh in the theater for both trailers.
  18. People still can't seem to get enough of them overseas though, judging by DM3's terrific gross internationally. Ice Age franchise eventually faltered despite being huge overseas, so I think the same could happen to the Minions within the next few films.
  19. I'm fully expecting Avatar 2 to have the most beautiful visuals ever seen on the big screen. I hope Cameron has designed the underwater environments in Pandora to be just as colorful and whimsical as the surface.
  20. Could JW2 get earlier release in China like most of Europe? I noticed June 7 or 8 as the opening date in major markets there.
