Either way, it's probably not going to make its budget back, domestically speaking. Big yikes, considering we're talking about a studio who usually nails horror films (It, Conjuring universe etc. ).
I for one am shocked. The genre is definitely not in my wheelhouse so I cant really be the judge of whether it looks good or not, but I guess I just lazily assumed this would be a go-to holiday film for adults, couples, girls night out etc.
Too bad for Emilia and Henry though. Both are likeable people whom I want to see succeed.
Neat. Another nice achievement for Bong Joon-ho. As I said, I'm interested to see what the PTA will be like. I have a feeling it won't be expanding any wider than this but we'll see.
I'll wait for this one. The concept definitely doesn't scream "Must See In Theatres" to me. Like @John Harris put it, the whole thing seems rather lightweight. Kind of like a Paddington movie.
Well Office Christmas Party would be a perfect example of what I said about the danger of releasing a Christmas movie too CLOSE to Christmas. It's a balancing act. You're probably right in that adult Christmas movies probably have limited appeal in general, but if they're going to release them anyway you wonder if US Thanksgiving isn't ultimately the perfect time.
Timeline for a release for a Christmas themed film is a hard thing to nail down. You don't want to release it too late either because Christmas themed movies crash and burn the moment the calendar hits December 26. I always thought the 2nd weekend of November was perfect. Open it before US Thanksgiving, let Thanksgiving help the 3rd/4th weekend legs and carry it over to Christmas time.
@TwoMisfits made a good point in another thread: maybe this is the right time for children/family oriented Christmas movies, whereas adults may want to wait until US Thanksgiving or right after for Christmas movies that are just for them. How do you think this would have done opening on the 27th alongside Knives Out and Queen & Slim?
Serious question here, not poking fun or engaging in fan wars: Why do you think it's performing like it is? I'm asking as someone who hasn't seen it for myself yet (I never go by reviews).
It's amazing how a certain portion of society nowadays literally do not give a shit about facts, and instead roll with their feelings or whatever. It's like the film Mary Queen of Scots. There absolutely would not have been a black man in Elizabeth's court but that doesn't matter. Diversity in the cast means more to people than presenting factual portrayals.
The early numbers for this are more surprising for me than Doctor Sleep. People really aren't going for this as much as I thought.
Rom coms really are dead.
That $17.2M estimate for Doctor Sleep is shocking as a whole but it makes sense based on the pitiful preview number. Last year on the same weekend (November 9-11) Overlord did 11.3x its previews ($900K). The same multi for DS's $1.5M previews gives $16.95M.
Thanks @Napoleon. I didn't look into it myself because I guess I wrongly assumed Universal would be vague about it, kind of like Warner Bros. with The Curse of La Llorona.
Expands into 603 theatres tomorrow, so officially, yet just barely, wide.
The PTA will be interesting. It's still not reaching too wide an audience, but is there enough interest to drive good numbers in 603 theatres? We'll see....
