  1. The director was announced in 2016 before the movie got shoot, how can this sentence: there's a conspiracy theory that Jackson directed this but was so embarrassed he paid his SFX guy to feature as the director. Make any sense ? He can obviously have played it safe, knew it was risky and pre-inventively attached someone else to it or he can do what George Lucas did with many projects, wanted to do a movie but not want to write it alone or actually direct it, thinking about cool movies and just making the part that are fun are something many would do. The misfire is quite attached to is name, look how much of the talk mention Peter Jackson in this thread and elsewhere.
  2. All possible guess, because younger Kids often have a rebate too on their ticket price Spiderman could be the one, that is not easy to say, Dark Knight/Avenges/BP played quite older than a 2002 Spider Man I would imagine, 2012 Avengers was the most 3D heavy of the tops I would imagine, when the format was still really popular. Top 10 according to the very rough Mojo estimate: Rank Title (click to view) Studio Est. 3. This, would be a slice of life during a spectacle or something, a proper biopic does not get the music and does not make much a the box office.
  4. I think the theory obviously does not make any sense (I imagine you are just trolling, that is a special lack of logics) https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/peter-jackson-adapt-sci-fi-fantasy-mortal-engines-940892 OCTOBER 24, 2016 Jackson will not sit in the director’s chair for this one, instead handing helming duties to longtime protege Christian Rivers, who will make his feature directorial debut with the fantasy. The director was announced before the project was made, outside a time travel machine he cannot have shadow directed it and not put is name on it because it ended up being so bad. Yes that really give credence to the theory of him being so embarrassed that he is removing is name from the director credit valid, that is some impressive level of twisted logic to fit a wanted narrative.
  5. I was surprised by how low the amount was for the DCEU vs Marvel considering how different the 2013 world is too 2008 worldwide, but that because there is a lot of Aquaman BO to get in.
  6. Always possible but a relatively small part of the 7 billion+ humans will ever see Aquaman, That the thing, Avatar was the 16th 3D release of 2009 during what was what the third or 4th time Hollywood was trying to push 3D, that much competition didn't create much of a been there done that among a giant proportion of Avatar audience, people that almost never watch any movie in theater.
  7. How packed they achieved to be, how clear all the concept were put front and taking full advantage of how fast you can do your edit with animation. A bit of cheating by how much of the exposition was made that way but by being so upfront about it and the movie never trying to achieve any form of realism that work. It really kicked of for me at the scene when he draw the graffiti with is uncle and the smile never really left my face until the end, imagine how nice of an experience would it have been to watch this without having been spoiled so much by the trailers, completely blind....
  8. Saying that about any non-mcu non sequel is quite strange by now, execution will pretty much always be important
  9. I have not seen ME, but at least for Valerian and from what I heard concerning ME, they were not really good and for Valerian quite miscast. It leave hope open, a really good one, with good trailers and attractive high concept bombing would be quite more troubling.
  10. Incredible arguably did show that domestic at least they could, a Imagine that a 300m Disney Animation Avengers giant disney/pixar like spectacle using the original cast voice over could get quite big. Nontraditional animation proposition has a very hard time going mainstream (regardless of quality, when we look at Laika run).
  11. If there something that is not particularly new is Nutcracker: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Nutcracker#In_popular_culture It would be hard to completely stop, they always were quite risky and when you score a Lord of The Rings/Avatar/Transformer/Potter/Hunger Games/Pirates/etc... it become so much of a money printing machine if you own most of it in house. I doubt Hollywood will stop the franchise model soon and they need from time to time to get new one to replace the dying one. If they ever achieve a Fast&Furious model of starting small and ramping up maybe they will stop trying those bid budget first time affair, but that was quite exceptional, I cannot imagine say a John Wick 4 going Mission Impossible scale. The Meg & Ready player one just pulled it off nice performance, has long has international buyer/partner make those try relatively safe. Disney is an other one that will probably continue to try from time to time, the way they can moneytise success and a franchise making a win so big that they can afford many failure, Artemis Fowl for example.
  12. Because of the self fulfilling prophecy, because we have usually knowledge of good release date of 1 or 2 market and never had anything that look like randomize test this is quite the speculation for anyone to say. For some title: Big holidays (in China notably), summer days, award season, do seem to matter and a reason studio fight for them, despite a much bigger competition movies achieve to do well in them and competition is quite the factor. Obviously horror around halloween, christmas movie during the Christmas season. Not sure I fully agree, like you said in the next sentence competition can be a major factor, did Monument Men worthy of a 154m run ? Or achieve it because there was almost nothing else in big budget star driven for adults in February ? And would not have work has well if it went when Saving Mr. Banks, Walter Mitty, Wolf of Wall Street, American Hustle, etc... were all playing at the same time. The importance could be going down. Less and less people are really connected to seasons, school kids are a smaller and small percentage of the movie audience, retired people for who.... are a bigger and bigger part of the audience.
  13. I imagine you do not believe that (or you are at that point delusional), it was the going on and on that people that had seen the movie and said to have liked it where only being influenced into it, mistaking different with good. Yourself after seeing it even too it was good and make that long rambling even more ridiculous. Nothing about disliking or not an aesthetic proposition (obviously if you have said it more than one time, it can play a role....).
  14. Well that was all around great (even coming with high expectation for this).
  15. Not sure it is automatic,, the high percentage of ood budget black&white that get acclaimed for their look is probably in good part explained by the fact that if you achieve to get a black and white movie greenlight (specially shoot natively in B&W) you must be someone really good with a really good project. No one was going on about how so much beautiful Kevin Smith Clerks was like they did for Schindler list.
  16. Amazon I think the LOTR, Deadline said they heard 150M for it yes.
  17. In general IMDB is a bit of a wikipedia an unreliable. But for the writing credits it is directly the WGA and only them that can touch it I think, they reflect that actual and are updated has the actual movie credit, that section would be. The trivia section, budget, numbers, release info, etc... those will be fill by mistake/not sources stuff.
  18. Must be rare (often character are not humans or the movie do not feature a really explicit couple). I have not seen it but John Smith and Pocahontas is probably the most famous one ?
  19. I am a bit curious on the half-serious reasons. Zemeckis is a giant name in the industry and appear in the making off/behind the scene material on locations. Because Spielberg didn't film anything between 98-2000 while being usually really productive ?
  20. Thanks, that make the studio harder to sales I imagine, has the studio worth more if it is not sold. Reading the more recent 1999 updated agreement I am not sure that this 97 clause was kept intact too: 23. ASSIGNMENT. 23.a. SPE’s Right to Assign. Subject to Section 23.b hereof, SPE shall be free to assign or license any or all of its rights hereunder, and/or to delegate any or all of its duties, obligations and liabilities, at any time and from time to time, to any person or entity, and upon such assignment, SPE shall be released and discharged of and from the delegated duties, obligations and liabilities if such assignment and/or delegation is to: (i) a person or entity into which SPE merges or is consolidated or (ii) a person or entity which acquires all or substantially all of SPE's business and assets and which assumes such obligations in writing, or (iii) a financially responsible entity which is controlled by, under common control with, or controls SPE which assumes such obligations in writing, or (iv) a “Major Studio” (i.e., and expressly defined as limited to: Warner Bros., Fox, Disney, Paramount, Universal, or Dreamworks) or United States television network, which assumes such obligations in writing. Any purported assignment by SPE in violation of this Section 23 shall be void ab initio. 23.b. Limitations. SPE may not assign this Agreement in its entirety except to (i) a person or entity into which SPE merges or is consolidated, or (ii) a person or entity which acquires all or substantially all of SPE's business and assets and which assumes such obligations in writing, or (iii) a person or entity which is controlled by, under common control with, or controls SPE, or (iv) a Major Studio which assumes such obligations in writing. SPE may not assign its right to produce any Production to, or enter into a co-production agreement with, any entity except (i) any of the entities described in Section 23.b(i) - (iv) hereof, or (ii) in connection a transaction which is, in substance, a financing transaction and pursuant to which SPE initially controls all United States distribution rights with respect to the applicable Production and either controls or has the right to obtain (e.g., through the exercise of one or more options) such United States distribution rights for the entire term of copyright. SPE may not assign its rights with respect to the ownership and control of the LP under Section 11 hereof except to any of the persons or entities described in Section 23.b(i), (ii) or (iii) hereof. Upon any assignment or delegation permitted under Section 23.b(i) - (iv) above, SPE shall be released and discharged of and from the delegated duties, obligations and liabilities. Seem like under the 1999 deal SPE could have selling the Spider Man rights to a company they acquire or merge with, a company that buy SPE or an other studio. SPE here being: Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc.
  21. Why would Apple would be more likely to sell the Spider Man rights back to disney more than Sony ?
  22. Yes , maybe just had 9 I think in 2018 2 39 Venom (2018) Sony $212,812,102 4,250 $80,255,756 4,250 10/5/18 3 99 Teen Titans Go! 23. That sound like a very strange explanation to me, Who in China had any idea who Boyega was when Force Awaken was released ? Was he even in a movie that got a China release before ? No one in the world outside the British had any opinion on him he was a total unknown. They would not reduce a big stars on poster like on those 2 example above, I think you have the good idea by looking at other release but I would suggest to look at release between 2012-2015/2016 of movies with non-star actor of color to see if it was really an exception on Force Awaken.
