I just watched Top Gun Maverick and honestly... It's one of the best action movies I have ever seen. This is a really special movie and one that will easily engage even people who dont have a clue about the original. My theater was far from packed, but it was a lot more busy than expected for a 15:30 Wednesday screening.

I am really eager to know how this will perform over here. Increase or decrease from Broly?

I would say it's average. People need to remember that Tuesday bumps are not the same anymore so this is not a great comparison with the other pre-pandemic MCU flicks.

It actually makes a lot of sense when the big selling point of the movie was exactly that. A lot of people being disappointed with the lack of more cameos is not surprising and confirms that this movie hype was VERY related to the cameos and the supposed direction it would give to the MCU and the lack of it definitely hurted it's perception and will cut part of it's legs. If this movie was just a regular Doctor Strange and Wanda movie without any buzz about multiverse, importance for the future of the MCU and cameos from other relevant characters this would make A LOT less in the opening weekend and we all know that. We can't judge this movie OW and therefore overall box office based on what it is, but we have to judge it based on peoples perception on what it would be and how they marketed the movie.

Yeah, but it is VERY different IMO. It is a lot more difficult to have an increase like that with a true standalone sequel of a trilogy than within a shared universe with a lot of other movies featuring the character to create hype, cameos from a lot of different big characters and the promise of changing the fate of the shared universe. A "fair" game would be a Doctor Strange movie out of the MCU featuring only Doctor Strange lore characters.

TDK opened to more than double of Batman Begins while being a normal sequel without a shared universe to give a lot of context to it, I think it is indeed the only "'true' impressive sequel increase number" in the SH genre.

Maybe japanese just don't like superheroes like the rest of the world do. Japan has it's own distinctive taste, this is not a surprise for me...

Insane opening as expected. But I think the legs on this one are not going to be too good, I am seeing lot of negative reactions, a lot more than the general for MCU movies...

You would be surprised by how many people only know Pattinson as the "Twilight guy" that is "too skinny to be Batman" and that "DC ruined the character with that choice". The reception of the GA for his casting was far from benefitial to the movie box office. He now proved most of these people wrong for sure, but there was certainly a lot of people that turned their eyes for this movie because of that.

Pattinson is indeed a great casting, but it arguably did more damage to the box office than helped it. Many people mostly the GA really disliked his casting because of all the "Twilight boy" stigma that he has (had?). For sure he now has proved almost everyone wrong, but this will only play a big part in the sequel and this for sure hurted this one. Also we don't know the impact of the HBO Max 45 days release yet. I personally think this won't affect much of the late legs, but we don't know how many people waited to see it home because of that stupid early announcement, I think that is a factor that is still a question mark. Also we cannot ignore the damage that BvS and Justice League did to Batman brand, every character or franchise suffers from badly received previous movies and needs to get the goodwill back, the was the same thing with TDK trilogy after Batman & Robin. I think 375M domestic and 775M worldwide without Russia and with China and South Korea really damaged is still pretty solid given that this movie also had all the other things going against it, I also think the sequels have A LOT of room to grow from now on, specially with the expanded universe with HBO Max.
