  1. Lol at Rings release date. Maybe that movie was an April Fools joke all along.
  2. And parents were practically taking out 2nd mortgages to get their daughter that $1000 Hannah Montana concert ticket.
  3. Hanks seems to finally have his career back on track after the decade of death that was '03-'12 for him. Captan Phillips, Saving Mr. Banks, and Bridge of Spies were all critical and commercial successes and Sully should follow suit.
  4. Ugh, Ethan making me feel old again. You woulda been like 5 when Dick in a Box came out.
  5. I know, I just meant I don't see why a big OW increase like TH2 would happen.
  6. SNL formed comedic musical group that have had huge viral hits like "Dick in a Box", "I'm on a Boat". "Jack Sparrow", "I Just Had Sex", etc. Time to see if all those youtube hits can actually sell movie tickets. Timberlake in the movie would definitely help.
  7. Totally agree. It's breaking out or flopping, no middle ground. We shouldn't ignore it though.
  8. I realized recently that both of the first two were 90m+ adjusted grossers back when Cube arguably wasn't as big of a draw as today, meaning we should all have this on our box office radar. 100m+ could be very likely.
  9. It's a dark horse at least. They've had quite a ton of success on youtube over the years, which obviously doesn't equate to movie tickets sold, but can't be denied they have a fanbase either.
  10. Legs could be shot though. There is an onslaught of big new movies every weekend after it opens. And comedies like the Lonely Island movie and Central Intelligence in June. This summer will be so interesting to track for legs. I swear, next to nothing might even get a 3x multi. So much competition at every corner in every genre.
  11. Why though? The first Hangover was a phenomenon among the college set. Is the first Neighbors really in that same league? Ted 2 would be unlikely as well though, the first wasn't nearly big enough for that kind of a drop off.
  12. Feel really good about 950 now with the revised TFA estimates. At the very least, #10 adjusted should be firmly on track.
  13. Good lord. They kind of look like The Cowardly Lion and one of the cats from the broadway show Cats had a baby. Talk about good call to nix that design.
  14. Typical. Foreigners have more interest in American economy and politics than Americans do. And then we wonder why we're in this mess in the first place.
  15. I agree, which is why I'm trying to remain optimistic about it despite all the reports suggesting there will just be some shoehorned new footage into an otherwise unrelated film. I think the most promising thing is Abrams willing to have his name all over this. I can't imagine why he would do that if he knows this is all just a dupe and quick cash grab. His name carries so much weight now after TFA, he really shouldn't be damaging his brand so willingly.
  16. Well, he usually is. Admittedly TR was much more mainstream than I ever expected it to be. Thought the violence would be a lot worse for one. Maybe we're getting numb to stuff these days, but I didn't even find the mauling particularly intense. And here I thought it was going to be like the most graphic thing in film based on the pre-release talk.
  17. It has to for that drop this weekend. People don't care enough about award shows for that to be the only source for the hold.
  18. Yeah the "unoriginal" argument against Avatar has always been extremely tired. We can shoot down all kinds of films using that. If you're gonna hate on the film, come up with a better reason.
  19. But I was never talking about what Avatar accomplished with competition in December, merely in January. Alvin and Sherlock had both cooled way off by this point in January, they were no longer formidable threats. Book of Eli was the only real threat at this point in Avatar's run. Opposed to RA2+The Revenant, which were both about equally as big as Book of Eli this weekend. All I ever said was TFA could have held a little better without the addition of The Revenant's huge breakout, of which there is no corresponding match in Avatar's run. Avatar had a RA2 to deal with in the form of Book of Eli and it even had a 13 Hours to deal with in the form of The Lovely Bones. It didn't have an extra 30m grosser in there though, nor a movie that made much of anything the week prior like The Revenant did. I was never arguing Avatar holds for TFA under any circumstance, just maybe 5-10% better holds last weekend and this weekend if it didn't have The Revenant. Who knows, that could have been all it took for 1b to happen. Impossible to know, just speculating. Now, I am done with this conversation, it is tiring.

  21. Wouldn't we need to also know 3D share info to say Avatar is still the clear winner though? I was under the assumption Avatar's 3D shares were just as massive in most markets as they were DOM. TFA surely didn't have as high of 3D shares.
  22. I really enjoyed the mature film-making too. A smart script, good actors and performances, worthwhile production values. Just don't get that much in the genre anymore.
