  1. The only caveat there though is that it has to have just as good of holds as Avatar this weekend to make that much, and TFA has yet to do that. Its Friday holds have been significantly worse thus far.
  2. Yeah, I don't think many were predicting Revenant over H8 3 months ago. However, it has seemed pretty obvious for the last month or so given the marketing for each film.
  3. So it is basically at the same gross as Avatar's Thursday heading into the weekend. Will be interesting to see what happens this weekend. Beating Avatar's 4th weekend will be pretty tough.
  4. Again, it all came down to marketing in this case. One movie had a near blockbuster level campaign, and the other was left to hope that people just knew it was coming out. Leo doesn't hurt either of course.
  5. Gotta give credit to Fox and the marketing team on this one, they worked their ass off making sure it had awareness. May land around 35 or so for the weekend (not going to predict higher because I suspect poor WOM to start kicking in quickly).
  6. In terms of how memorable/iconic they are, in my opinion it would go: 1. Star Wars 2. Snow White (who's not familiar with it all these decades later? Pretty much second only to Oz for pre 1960's endurance) 3. Gone With the Wind 4. E.T. 5. Titanic 6. Jaws 7. The Sound of Music 8. The Exorcist 9. The Ten Commandments 10. Doctor Zhivago
  7. I would love to know what Cameron really thinks about it at all. I'm not so sure he didn't expect to rule the domestic box office for the rest of his life.
  8. I keep hoping he won't get in. I still don't see how more than a few at the Academy would be passionate enough about that film to put it #1 in any category? So hopefully there's still a chance.
  9. Well can you blame the guy though? I'd pretty much be begging too if I gave the best film performance of the 21st century and got snubbed by them for an utterly basic "good" performance.
  10. BoS is picking up a ton of momentum lately. I think it's getting about 7 noms at the Oscars and Spielberg isn't out of contention either. Would be tragic if he kocked miller out though like at the BAFTAs.
  11. Wow, I totally missed that somehow, but you're right I do think that's what chas was asking. Oops. EDIT: Actually it looks like chasmmi answered it in the "among" sense (choosing Carol), so I think that is what was meant. Can see how that can be taken either way though.
  12. Yeah, I was thinking this would get crushed among all the competition this summer, but the trailer is very promising and I suppose it doesn't have much for direct competition. 100m+ seems back on track.
  13. That would seem obvious, but I do think this is the first one with the potential to decrease each installment. VIII's drop could be softer than ESB's or AOTC's because of the cliffhanger (opposed to ANH) and people generally loving TFA (opposed to TPM), hence tons of interest in what happens next and possible bigger audience retention (also think THG to CF). IX could end up dropping from that because VIII already did better than normal for the second installment, and because SW franchise fatigue setting in by then. None of the other two trilogies had to deal with such a rapid onslaught of SW movies, so we don't know how that affects the trilogy. Poor IX has the disadvantage of potentially being the fifth film in four years, so I don't know that that bodes well for it. I wouldn't be surprised with something like this: TFA: 1b VIII: 825m IX: 775m Either way, it's amazing this whole trilogy has a fantastic shot at all outgrossing Avatar DOM.
  14. I can't stand that thing. He used to be really good about letting makeup hide it, but now it's like he tells them to fuck off and we're all forced to try our hardest to pay attention to anything else when he's on screen.
  15. I think The Big Short will be over 80 by the end of the game. Fantastic holds are coming.
  16. Domestically it ended up having an impressive little run. Too bad about OS.
  17. I am fully convinced anyone who saw Avatar in IMAX 3D and was not impressed with the 3D must have the kind of eyes that can't see the effect correctly, because it was phenomenal.
  18. With a little more nuanced third act I feel like the first one could have been deserving of a BP nom.
  19. Sooooo..... is anyone not just taking a complete stab in the dark at question 11 this week? I mean wow, I have no freakin clue!
  20. Instead they filled their pants with shit, so the aroma of the theater would match the film.
