  1. That would be amazing, but unfortunately, no. I said this before, no other movie will touch or even be close to Spirited Away, ever. Okay, maybe some movie in the distant future will get there, but definitely not Frozen. Also yes, $100m minimum (or lock) is crazy and illogical. Minimum means it cannot be lower than that, and we know it could. So $100m possible yes, minimum no. And I'm actually rooting for it to get to that number. But for me now, it's around $75m
  2. Wow on its OD Frozen was way below the others but this Saturday it's already bigger than Macau & Dad, and close to Monkey King? Looks like even though Frozen's number is low compared to others in China, it has the same crazy great legs like in other countries.
  3. This. For a movie with success this big and WOM this good in other countries, delayed release actually helps to build the hype in Japan.
  4. I think I like Japanese title the most, アナと雪の女王 (Anna and the Snow Queen). Not only it shows there are 2 main characters, but also it sounds exciting. Like there will be something interesting between Anna and this Snow Queen. Yeah, Indonesia is still a small market, but growing rapidly. Until 2009, the biggest box office for a movie was $5.2m, and since then at least 18 movies made more and the biggest one right now is $15.3m. I believe this year we will have our first $20m+ movie (TASM2 or TF4), but unfortunately we will never know.
  5. That's like the answers to "What's your Native American name?" quiz thing lol. I did that quiz on the internet once, and I got "The Handsome One Who Lives Below". I'm not sure where "below" is, but at least I'm handsome lol. I don't know why, but BOM has stopped reporting box office numbers for Indonesia since June 2013 . Frozen was released here on November 29, 2013. I did manage to find the latest update for Indonesian box office on the internet and it was August 2013. According to that, DM2 broke the record for the highest grossing animated film ever with around $6.5m. Disney/Pixar films consistently produce great box office numbers here, but there are always one non-Disney/Pixar that manage to be the biggest animation each year (except 2010, where TS3 and Tangled were #1 and #2 animated films). I really want to know how successful Frozen was, since it had amazing WOM, and was in the theaters longer than any other animated films (including DM2).
  6. Yeah I was lowballing the numbers. China could be bigger too. TS3 is the target now. And then in several weeks, we'll be talking about Skyfall WW. lol
  7. You're right. Another $30m SK + $17m China + $40m domestic + $913m = $1b WITHOUT Japan (and other markets that are still playing Frozen)
  8. Yeah, it's literally untouchable. In Yen, there's a HUGE gap between Spirited Away (30b yen) and the 2nd highest grossing movie, HP1 (20b yen). And the ticket prices have stayed the same for 20+ years, so until the prices increase somehow, no movie will be close to Spirited Away. Anyway, I'm optimistic about Frozen in Japan. Yeah 50m should be the target, but personally I could see 70m.
  9. What the hell? That is just insane for Frozen! Only several days ago I thought beating IM3 was hard. I can't believe we're talking about Avatar right now.
  10. Nice! 60m+ OW for Lego! 250m+ total? Btw, it looks like Lego is doing great here. The show that I went to was 90% full, even though it's facing a local comedy that broke OW record for a local movie last week (and is having sold out shows in its 2nd weekend). So I think it will do good business in this part of Asia. Interestingly, I saw more teens and young adults than families in the crowds. And those people (including me and my friends) enjoyed it as much as the kids, or even more.
  11. So $30m is still possible in China anyway. Roller coaster indeed. lol
  12. LOL. Do they even know where it is? That guy's drunk, but still. Anyway, The Philippines has an athlete at the winter olympics? That's really cool.
  13. I was gonna ask the same thing. I thought animated movies weren't popular in SK. KFP success is understandable since it has Asian theme. But Frozen? Never thought it would be the 3nd most attended foreign movie ever, and have a chance to be the 2nd! That's just crazy. I thought because it's a family, and Oaken probably didn't know their names, so he just called them "family". It's possible, right? But yeah they could be Oaken's family too.
  14. Wasn't there a woman in that sauna? Since she looked older than the other kids, I just assumed she's the topless guy's wife. I also don't think it's Oaken’s family, just a random family visiting the sauna. I can't say for sure though.
  15. I was talking about the showtimes. It only has like 10% right? That limits the opportunity to see the movie, no? But anyway, how good is it doing today?
  16. That's right, everyone has to make choices. But there are people who might love that kind of movie, but don't have the opportunity to even choose it because of the limited theaters/screens. Now THEY will miss out on it.
  17. Well yeah, but back then most people here didn't know there would be big competitions for Frozen. Until a week ago, I didn't know The Monkey King would be released just days before Frozen. I thought after DM2 the market would be empty. Although, I should've figured that there would be local blockbuster movies released on Lunar New Year. And btw most people thought 30m was average, NOT conservative. Only few of them thought 50m was possible, and they're not familiar with Chinese box office. Also, not until recently someone pointed out that Frozen would be less appealing to Chinese audience. So yeah, I think I understand why people came out with that numbers. And I get about the movies-are-disposable thing. It's the same here too, but for slightly different reasons. Theaters have limited screens so after 3 weeks they have to give the screens to new movies. But what I meant was, did they already have some kind of agreement before its release about how long Frozen would be played, or the limited time is just a natural thing? Like if there were no movies released next weekend, would it still be in the theaters?
  18. Well, everyone here are familiar with Lego. The kids play with it and the adults played with it when they were kids. I guess it is popular, but I'm not sure if it's THAT popular.
  19. Actually the competitions that Frozen is facing are NOT animated movies. The Monkey King is a CGI-fest live action movie. But that's not important. Anyway, is Frozen really in theaters only for 10 days? Or there are just so many competitions, especially from local rom-com movies on VD, that Frozen is presumed to only have 10 days to make money, while not necessarily out of the theaters?
  20. You got it wrong. $10m isn't impressive at all. But for a Thor movie, it is. Actually the increase from the first movie is the one that's impressive. That shows that superhero movies are getting more accepted in Japan. Usually, only Spiderman did big numbers there, while other superhero movies tanked. For example, X-Men 3 only made 1.5 billion yen in the year when Hollywood movies were bigger (Dead Man's Chest and Goblet of Fire made more than 10 billion yen). But for other movies, say Frozen or TF4, $10m would still be a very disappointing number.
  21. That's just amazing. I remember after last week's Friday number I said the target would be 6m admissions. It has already done it rather easily lol.
  22. Yeah, I'm curious too. I mean its 3rd weekend is bigger than its 1st and 2nd. Crazy!
  23. That's Takako Matsu? She's one of my favorite actresses in Japan! I know she can sing, but I didn't know she could sing that well . The singing is great but the lyrics though... I don't know, a little bit cheesy? Kinda too literal. It would work as a J-Pop song, not so much as a musical song. But that's just me.
  24. That IS so Japanese. I never thought about it but yeah, Frozen is very appealing in that way. That would be amazing, but even Miyazaki numbers in general are hard too reach. Only Avatar managed to match them ($150m+) in the last 10 years. But Finding Nemo's or Toy Story 3's number ($100m+) is possible if everything goes well.
  25. That's just crazy! So the target now is 6m+ admissions then.
