  1. Oh ok, thanks. So its opening will be pretty much like Salman's recent movies then. Another 100 crore for him I guess.
  2. Salman Khan's Jai Ho was just released here in Indonesia today. How big will it be in India? Will it break any Dhoom 3's records?
  3. Wow! What's the biggest animated movies in SK? Will Frozen beat it?
  4. Exactly! The successes in the US and many other countries will also help. And that epic Japanese trailer is easily the best of all Frozen trailers. I've watched it again and again just to relive the movie.
  5. I'll try to answer this. Like what yjs said, Japanese love animations with strong drama and something unique or magical. You can see that from animations from Ghibli, especially those directed by Miyazaki. Even though they are animated films, they are made not only for kids, but also for adults. Many of them implicitly have deep and mature themes in the stories. They are heartfelt, and again, strong drama, with some laughs here and there, and unique concepts, just like Pixar movies. Even Doraemon movies have heartfelt scenes in them, whether about family, friendship, or bravery. That's why Japanese love Pixar. Their movies are the closest ones to Japanese animations, especially Ghibli. On the other hand, animations from other studios like Dreamworks, are mainly comedy with a lot of pop culture references, which are probably unfamiliar to Japanese audience, and less drama. That's why I have high hopes for Frozen. It's a heartfelt story, with magical elements, has a deep mature theme and can be enjoyed by all ages. And like most Miyazaki's movies, the lead characters are female. Not to mention, it's a Disney musical and Japanese love Disney AND musical. So I think it will break out there.
  6. Wow its 5th weekend is still bigger than its 2nd . Reminds me a little bit of Avatar's run. And did its weekly number actually increase? 4th week: ¥960m (4.16b - 3.20b) 5th week: ¥990m (5.15b - 4.16b) Is 10b reachable?
  7. Wow Jan OW record for Ride Along? How the hell did that happen? I had never heard this movie until like 5 days ago. Is this kinda like Paul Blart where it seems like an adult comedy, but actually it's something that family would love? Anyway, pretty good January no? Feels like 2009 with breakout hits week after week. Too bad nothing good for the rest of the month though.
  8. Nice list! I love all the movies at #16 - #25, especially On the Waterfront and The Sting. I still remember how I was blown away after watching The Sting. And personally I would put The Sound of Music probably near the top. It's one of my favorite movies of all time.
  9. Funf Freunde is "The Famous Five" right? That brings a lot of childhood memories. I loved the books when I was little and always imagined being one of them, having adventures and stuff. I didn't know there were 3 German films based on the books. Were the first two successful?
  10. Ugh I'm sooo pissed off right now. No Tom Hanks, no Emma Thompson, no Joaquin Phoenix, no Monsters University, no Rush AT ALL. Especially Tom Hanks because I honestly think he's amazing in Captain Phillips, one of the best performances last year. I was even kinda rooting for him to win his 3rd Oscar, but he's not even nominated . Happy about Gravity and Sally Hawkins though. Just watched Blue Jasmine, and I thought Hawkins and Blanchett were great in it. Wanted Sandra Bullock to win, but now I'm rooting for Blanchett too. Still want Gravity to win BP, although I'll be fine if 12YAS wins. Also, Let It Go better wins Best Song. Still disappointed with that GG result.
  11. Yes, Japan loves Pixar movies. In fact, Pixar and local productions are the only animated movies that can make big numbers in Japan. Toy Story 3 and Finding Nemo made more than $100m. Even Cars 2 grossed $38m. Also, Monsters Inc was HUGE, so it's natural for its prequel to make that big. Actually, for a non-Pixar movie, DM2 number is really good. It's one of the biggest non-Pixar foreign animations ever. Judging from how MU did, I also think Finding Dory is gonna be huge in Japan.
  12. That's really stupid. I hope they don't do that. This movie deserves to be seen as it is.
  13. I've always wanted to go there too. I had plans but all of them were cancelled. I should've gone while I was still in Japan. It's cheaper from there. And I had more money back then. And yeah, I've seen Snowpiercer. Pretty violent but great movie. Kinda philosophical. It was released here in November. I'm surprised there's no release date yet in US. I mean, it has Chris Evans, Octavia Spencer and Ed Harris. Btw, do they really re-cut foreign films for US release? Why?
  14. So Frozen is gonna be #1 movie of 2013 in France? DM2 is currently #1 with 4,6M admissions or something, right?
  15. Wow thanks for all the insights guys. Really interesting. More than I expected . "Japanized", I like that. Easy to understand, because I lived in Japan and I'm following the box office too. I knew D-War was bad from the reviews, but I watched it anyway out of curiosity. Didn't know it was THAT bad lol. Fortunately I had already watched a bunch of great Korean films before that. I think the first one that caught me was My Sassy Girl. That one was very popular here in my country. Then I moved to Japan, so I got easier access to Korean films. I remember I watched Shiri and was blown away. Then Friend became one of my favorites ever. Memories of Murder, Silmido, and Oldboy made me more and more interested in Korean films. And then in around 2003-2004, Winter Sonata was sooooo HUGE in Japan and everything Korean became popular. Thanks to that, a lot of Korean films were released in Japan. I got to see Taegukgi, Welcome to Dongmakgol, The King and the Clown, The Host, etc in the theater. Then I moved back to Indonesia, and now a lot of Korean films are released here too. I just love Korean films. A lot of them are really good. They don't always have happy endings. A lot of them are tragic/sad/bitter, but that's what I like about them. I almost have never been disappointed after watching a Korean film.
  16. Can I ask something? It seems that South Korean box office for local movies has exploded in the last 2 years. I mean before 2012, there were only 5 local movies above 9 million admissions, and the last one was in 2009. Now there will be 11 soon. 3 of them had more than 12 million admissions in the span of 7 months. How did that happen? Since South Korea is a developed country, I don't think the market is expanding. Or is it? Anyway, I love Korean movies. They are really really good. I've seen all Korean movies in the top 20, except The Face Reader and The Attorney (I hope they will be released here), and I love ALL of them (except D-War). Some of them are among the best movies I've ever seen in my life.
  17. I wanna know how it's doing here, but unfortunately for some unknown reason, they stopped reporting box office for Hollywood movies in Indonesia . I want to compare it to AUJ. Last year AUJ was disappointing, thanks to 2 local movies released around the same time that eventually became the #1 and #10 highest grossing movies of all time. This year it's even worse, since DOS has to face not 1, not 2, but 4 (!) local big blockbuster movies. Somehow, December has become the "summer" of local movies here. Fortunately, no other competitions from Hollywood. Well, there are Walking with Dinosaurs and 47 Ronin, but both bombed.
  18. Is Dhoom 3 any good? It opened here today and I'm interested to see it because of Aamir Khan. Also, some box office question. Is Dhoom 3 expected to break the all time box office record in India? It would be nice if Aamir Khan takes back the crown. Btw, after 3 Idiots (which I really love and made me interested in Bollywood movies) became a huge hit here, other movies started to be released widely in the theaters. This year, a lot of the all time grosser were released, like Chennai Express, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Krrish 3. I'm happy with that because now it's easier and faster for me to see Bollywood movies.
  19. Not to mention it's based on one of the all time best selling novels (sold more than 3.1 million copies and counting). And it has a soundtrack by a band that is considered a legend.
  20. Rush!! Love that movie. Pleasantly surprised for that best picture nomination. Sad that Saving Mr. Banks isn't there though. Also surprised with zero nominations for The Butler. The TV nominations are kinda weird for me. No Homeland and Game of Thrones?? What's with that? Ugghh...
  21. That's just the currency talking. Yes, 2011 is still better, but in Yen, Les Mis (almost 6b) is bigger than MI4 (5.4b), and Ted (4.4b) is bigger than TF3 (4.2b). Even Monster's University (9b) is not that far behind HP DH2 (9.6b). Besides, 2010 was much bigger than 2011 both in USD and especially in Yen. It's even bigger if you include Avatar (since it made most of its money in 2010). So 2011 wasn't that special. Btw, Japan LOVES musical. And Les Mis is one of the most popular musicals there. So I kinda get how it's big in Japan.
  22. I think by now, The Conjuring has become the biggest horror movie of all time in Indonesia. No numbers yet, but based on its OW and great WOM, it could outgross the Hobbit. We really love horror movies. And this one is a must-see for everybody here. It became some kind of a pop culture. When we are describing something extremely scary and intense, we would say "It's even scarier than The Conjuring".
  23. Wow! $4m in Indonesia? That's crazy! That's uber blockbuster territory, and it has a chance to be in the top 5 all time list, or at least top 6, depending on how big MOS did (there's no info at all about its gross or OW in Indonesia). Already the 3rd biggest animated movie ever and soon will be #1. Currently it's behind KFP2 ($5,568,530) and Mad 3 ($4,155,160). Not surprising though because that's what people have been talking about all week. I've seen it twice already. Another week of school holiday will hopefully give DM2 some great legs. Maybe the 3rd $10m movie this year? (Or 4th, again, depends on MOS number) There's no competition too since Turbo will do nothing. I don't even know when it will be released.
  24. Yeah, it's not really canceled. They just decided to end it to get good ending. Season 7 is actually the highest rated season of Dexter. Season 8 could top it, since people will be interested in how it's gonna end.
