Weekend Actuals 7/5-7/7

Ouch for Kevin Hart, other then that the estimates are pretty close for the most part.

Edit: Read KH's difference wrong, thought it was 600K, so all of them are pretty close.

Toy Story 3 has some pretty great legs after it's first two weekends. Almost all of it's summer Monday's had drops less than 50%.

DM2 did incredible itself though. I don't think it will make less than $350 million but it's gonna have to do some really good holding on to get to $400 million. I'd say $370-385 million seems more likely. The real question is what was the 3D share? I think if you take 3D out of TS3 it goes from $415 million to around $350-360 million. It's OW had a 60% share (but I think it went down each weekend after). Most animated films now seem to be around 40%, but DM2 probably had more screens and therefore more 2D showtimes to choose from. In attendance DM2 probably only needs about $380 million to match TS3. (this is all assumed estimates btw)

And Nemo and Shrek 2 remain untouchable... for now.

As for the other stuff: Great hold for The Heat (definitely see it playing well over the rest of the summer, audience I saw it with loved it), meh for Ranger, and Pain & Gain might hit $50 million afterall.

I'm fairly sure I read DM2 3D share was just 27%. Unusually low % for an animated movie. I know I picked 2D both times I saw it.

If that doesn't scream people don't give a shit about 3D I don't know what will.

Either way all the better for DM2.

and the legs have brought it to only a 13% decline from the first movie.

Of course, this film also had 3D, where that one didn't ... the ST09 adjusts to over 300 with 3D.

I'm pleasantly surprised at the legginess it exhibited to get to where it did, but it definitely seems like the series topped out with ST09.

So STID has had the best legs of all the blockbusters this Summer.

It didn't, and it's fanbase is naturally less frontloaded than many other blockbusters.

What Went Wrong?

Its opening and final gross.

3D or not, money is money. I think studios give 2 fucks whether attendance drops when the movie still brings 223M Domestically. Not to mention 440M WW.

Sure, STID made less domestically, but no matter how you spend the Domestic numbers, the WW number makes up for it.

Basically STID was a SUCCESS.

Its opening and final gross.

IM3: 2.3x

FF6: 2.4x

STID: 3.1x (From 3-Day)

          2.6x (From 4-Day)

Again, currently the best legs of the Blockbusters. (Not including WHD,WWZ and MoS yet)

Other than the fact that it lost money.

Production Budget: $190 million

Domestic:  $223,065,011  50.3%Foreign:  $220,800,000  49.7% = Worldwide:  $443,865,011

STID is not a failure but its gross is seen as a disappointment to many because it made less than the first domestically despite added 3D and being a follow up to a well received film. No matter what people say, nothing will convince me that that is not somewhat disappointing

come on ED, you know better than that

It needed somewhere in the range of $550-600M to break even at the box office.
