This summer we've had more "original" films than sequels/remakes/reboots, so far...

Tyler Perry Presents Peeples $4,600,000
Epic $33,500,000
Now You See Me $29,400,000
After Earth $27,500,000
The Purge $34,100,000
The Internship $17,300,000
This Is The End $20,700,000
World War Z $66,400,000
The Heat $39,100,000
White House Down $24,900,000
The Lone Ranger $29,200,000
Pacific Rim

Remakes/Reboots/Sequels

The Great Gatsby
Despicable Me 2
Monsters University
Man of Steel
Fast and Furious 6
The Hangover Part III
Star Trek Into Darkness
Iron Man 3
Grown Ups 2

Not much more, but still more.

Almost all the reboots/remakes/sequels are already profitable but at least half of the original films are flat out bombs.

and people wonder why Hollywood prefers one over the other.

Reboots/remakes/sequels are based on proven formulas while original film are unproven formulas. The latter are far more risky.

People always bitch about too many sequels and reboots, myself included half of the time... Then GA really should give new properties a shot but they usually don't.

So I really can't blame studios from making these films from a business standpoint. Why risk losing money at all?
